Just wondering if you'll be getting a joint account or keeping it separate. We've been living together for 2 years and have kept it separate so far and it works. We split the bills 50/50, I right the checks and he gives me his portion. We're going to keep it that way after marriage....maybe its an independence thing on my part and a lesson thing on his. His ex wife emptied his bank account on a regular basis because she viewed his money as hers even if there were bills to be payed. I don't have an issue with this at all but my family finds it very odd and sees it as a possible 'issue' in the long run. I know for a fact if I needed money he'd hand it to me no questions asked. Neither of us has a problem sharing our money so I don't see an issue.
Just throwing it out there to see what others think. Maybe i'm just crazy....well I am crazy but not sure if I'm crazy about this.

Re: The bank account
We've always separate accounts and a joint account called 'Couple Saving' but is now the 'Wedding Fund'. When it comes to money we don't hide anything so I am not worried. I guess when we get married the change the wedding fund, to a high yield savings and we'll open a joint checking for bills but still maintain our separate checking accounts for when you just wanna buy something or for gifts for the other person. I'm gonna be real though, I was raised by a single mom, so I will be putting away for rainy day! Oh and he knows this! lol
ETA more.

Re: The bank account
We live separately, but right now with the wedding planning this is what works for us too. I write the check, and he hands over his half. We believe in this day and age it's important to keep most of the finances separate except for joint bills. You never know what can happen. One of you could get laid off, in an accident, etc. etc.
Our plan is to have two separate accounts for his and her stuff, and one joint for common stuff. We like it. I am the more established one, and FH has already told me he doesn't want to take money I had pre-relationship. Nor do I want to take his.
Money is sticky.. if it works, stay with it.

Re: The bank account
We've been living together for over a year now and used to spilt everything 50/50.
Just last month we started combining our money. It actually works out a lot better for us.

I was told this by my aunt who has been married to my uncle for almost 40 years. Throughout the years she has always maintained a separate account because you never know what the future holds and she never wanted to be caught penniless if he ever left her. Said she'd seen it to many times before.
We are looking into a joint savings account which will be called the wedding fund like yours....then it will become the boat fund or whatever. Probably won't have a joint checking though. We also have full-disclosure...he has my account passwords and I have his. Honesty is the best policy.

Re: The bank account
We are going to have a joint account for the house bills and then we will also keep separate accounts for our own stuff, which both of us are fine with

Re: The bank account
separate. i opened a wedding account for us but i 'm the only one contributing . we do split bills b/c we live together and i'm actually keeping it this way.
my ex-fiance and i had a joint account and man was it an extremely messy situation. same with joint credit cards.
i want to keep everything separate except for the 1 savings (wedding 1st and then it'll be for a house, and then our kids, etc, etc)

Re: The bank account
It started that we had a joint for household bills, etc. and still used our separate accts. over time though, we've stopped using our separate ones and just use the joint for everything.

Re: The bank account
we started a joint one that we nicknamed the 'wedding fund'. I put some money in there every month. Hopefully it will grow to a good amount!

Re: The bank account
we were going to open a joint account this year, but since i am still in school & still in need of financial aid, we cant do so until next year. FH was the beneficiary of his dads life insurance & all the money is tied up in CD's. so what he did to make things fair was put me as the beneficiary on 2 of the CD's & i put him as the beneficiary on my retirement plan. then he gave me money to pay off my credit cards which my parents feel is an even trade for me & them to pay for the wedding. we do live together & he pays for the cable & all the groceries & pay the rent. so things r working good this way.

Re: The bank account
i was just thinking about this the other day!
right now we have seperate accounts. when it comes to things for the wedding we need to pay, he'll either give me his portion or i'll give him mine. I want to open up a separate joint savings or checking account soon though because i think it will help later on with paying the wedding off and then we could use it after we're married for house hold expenses. I still want to keep my own personal checkings account for my personal bills and stuff like that though.
I think that since your way of doing things has been working for 2 years now, you won't have no problems in the future. yall obviously have your own system in place and i think its great that it works for the both of you. don't get nervous about how other feel. you two know each other best!

Re: The bank account
we opened up a joint account to save for the wedding that each of us put into as much as we can. and we still have our own seperate accounts too. we figure the joint account will be used for house, kids and so on after the wedding.

Re: The bank account
Good question! We've been living together for 2 years and have separate accounts. I contribute monthly toward the wedding fund, and he contributes towards the house fund. We'll get one joint account closer to the wedding, and maintain our separate accounts.

Re: The bank account
We each have our own Checking and Savings account. Once we got engaged we opened up a joint checking account and every pay check we put the same amount of money in the joint account and the other to bills and our own savings account..it works well!
