Well he didn't but one of the workers did, they said they will fix it, will it be a weak spot for the rest of the life of the tub?

if the tub is new i would have them send someone that is approved to do work on that type of tub.

The contractor said we will never know it was chipped, but I am still a bit owrried about it. I think it would be a bigger deal to replace the tub, though since all of the tile work is already done.

Yes if the tile work is done I would leave the tub as is, and tell them you will find someone to fix the tub and you will send him the bill. Then find someone you trust to fix it, because you want to make sure he dose not do it himself and pic up one of those kits from the stores, then I would be a little worried.
