The Gates - a review
Hi everyone - Not that I'm an art critic or anything like that, but I was really so moved by this exhibit that I just wanted to share my wonderful experience with everyone here too. If you are local, I really recommend you try to see The Gates for yourself. Hope you enjoy my review!
I only took a short stroll through the park, but what I saw was so absolutely amazing that it's hard to find the words to describe it! At first, I felt like I was Alice walking into Wonderland - everything is so brightly colored and strangely beautiful - it was like walking through a dream and I almost expected to end up in another world when I came out of The Gates. The sun peeked in and out of the clouds and a slight breeze ruffled the Gates - standing stoicaly in line like an imperial army on the verge of battle. Except there was no hint of malice anywhere. Rather, it was more ethereal and peaceful, very Zen in a wierd kind of way. So simple, yet so beautiful and awe inspiring that I wanted to wander down every meadering path through this strangely decorated new world. Walking through the exhibit, the gates themselves seemed to whisper lovingly in a soft shuffle of orange kisses. I slowly felt the noisy world around me disappear, and just lost myself in the sheer size and beauty of the architecture running through the entire park. I wasn't alone in my silent admiration. Even the other visitors seemed to be spellbound as they spoke in hushed tones, almost in reverence to this great beauty enveloping the entire Park. I must have been looking up the entire time, marvelling at the concept and appreciating the massive effort of these two talented artists. I felt like a small child carefully exploring a much larger and unknown world with secrets to share. I didn't want to leave, but my lunch hour was ticking away and the drab corporate world was dragging me back to reality. Feeling bewitched, I reluctantly left the Park - longingly gazing back at The Gates the whole time, until I was back on Broadway with all the usual lunchtime madness.
The Gates is pure seduction. I feel so lucky that I was able to experience this firsthand, and I'm once again so grateful as a New Yorker to have such artistic talent readily available. Truly amazing on every possible level!! I plan on coming back with my camera and trying to cover the entire park. Just magnificent - I give The Gates four stars!![]()
