The Great White Fire in R.I.

The Great White Fire in R.I.

I saw a tape of the performance when the place went up in flames and I was totally freaked out that people were standing around as the place caught fire. They actually thought it was part of the show. I don't know why, but I'm totally freaked out by the whole thing. I think about how many times I've been in a location similiar to that club (small, crowded, short ceilings). Heck, I'm supposed to go see Vince Neil at Mulcahey's next weekend. Maybe I'll change my plans. So tragic!

Shamee its scary when things like that happen.

People are attracted to a horror scene. Think about a car accident on a parkway, how many cars slow down to look at the horrific scene, but ask them to go to a museum and they would rather clip there toes nails with a rusty twizzer.

Its scary how people can just stand there and watch but sometimes they just dont know what to do. Me I run!

I am going to use 9/11 as a perfect example because I was there. Everyone stood completely still because they didnt know what to do. My fellow collegues stood there in shock not knowing where to run to first. Kidding me, i was on the last train out of the city.

Its just scary how someone can stand there and watch it happen, but people are attracted to a horror scene.

It was all over the news this morning. Here is a brief clip:

At least 65 dead in nightclub fire
Rhode Island concert's pyrotechnics spark blaze

WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island (CNN) --The Rhode Island nightclub swept by a fast-moving fire that killed at least 65 people apparently did not have a permit for a heavy metal band's pyrotechnics display that ignited the fire, West Warwick city officials said Friday.

Police Chief Peter Rousseau said the club, The Station, had not applied for the required permit and the club's stage technician said he didn't know the band was planning to use fireworks. The band's lead singer said the group had the club's permission for the display.

Once the fireworks ignited the foam soundproofing behind the stage, flames moved swiftly. 'The building was well involved inside of three minutes,' said Fire Chief Charlie Hall, who told reporters that the building had no sprinklers because its relatively small size didn't require them.

'The whole place got tons of black smoke. We were breathing black smoke,' clubgoer Lisa Shea told CNN Friday morning. 'I got knocked on the ground. People were standing on my back, my head. I was holding my head and I said, 'I'm going to die here!' All I could think about was my mother, and I said, 'I got to get up! I got to get up!'' (Survivors' stories)

The fire broke out around 11 p.m. Thursday at a concert featuring the 1980s metal group Great White, known for its hit song 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy.' One of the group's guitarists, Ty Longley, was among the missing.

'I'm so sad. It's just such a tragedy. I'm really shocked right now,' said Great White lead singer Jack Russell in an emotional interview Friday morning.

At least 168 people were injured in the fire and taken to nearby hospitals, according to hospital officials. Several were flown to the nearest burn centers in Massachusetts.

Hall said most of the bodies have been recovered from near the front entrance of the building and that the fire itself was 'the main contributing factor' to their deaths.

I was at the great white concert here in mulchays ( dont know spelling) on saturday night
I commented to my friend that it was crazy that they had this firework show and its such a small place..
It was a great show.. tickets were only 15 dollars and it was something different to do..
I cant beleive that my feelings that it was unsafe were right..

I know it sounds corney but it could save your life..

KNOW WHERE YOUR EXITS ARE

REason why most of these ppl died was becuase the smoke was so black, they couldnt see the exits.
I forget sometimes but do try to see where exits are when I can remember

I heard about this on the news this AM - so sad. What Jodi says is so true - a former cop once told me it was the easiest thing to do to save your life - just KNOW the nearest exit and you're a lot better off then otherwise.

This is so terribly sad. I saw the video too. They said the count is now 75 who lost their lives. Gee..I never thought to look for emergency exits. Very Very sad story.
