Damnit - just found out that the Derby is on my wedding date - sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet. One of FH's parents friends is obsessed and actually told his wife he didn't know if he could come to our wedding because that would mean he would miss the Derby. Thanks!
So now FH is working with the hall to broadcast it on a plasma TV during our cocktail hour! I mean - I guess it will be entertaining for the guests, but it's annoying for me!

OMG! This absolutely stinks!
I wouldn't compromise Alicia - it's your wedding and the couple if the focus not a HORSE RACE for eff's sake!
I went to a wedding once during the SUPER BOWL - there were a bunch of men that were totally po'd - but in the end, they totally forgot about it, and the DJ would update folks of the score throghout the night.
I wouldn't go as far as televising it! They're there for a REASON!!!!

FH and I went to a wedding last year, and their cocktail hour was during the Preakness. Well, there were three tvs in the cocktail room, brought in specifically for the race! It was a good time, and after the race, they were removed and the party continued

its craziness, when we were first looking at dates, FI told me we couldn't have
early feb (Superbowl)
sept/oct (MLB playoffs/world series)
may (NHL playoffs & NBA playoffs)
I never even thought about horse racing.

My cousin is getting married in FL in February and her date was originally the weekend of Daytona. Needless to say, she changed her date. Not because of the race (not fans) but because hotel rooms were through the roof!

Chances are somewhere around the world everyday there is a sport event going on!

I think it would actually be pretty cool to broadcast this during the cocktail hour...I mean people don't really do much beside eat since dancing and such doesn't start until the reception. it will give them something to, and you will come out smelling like a rose for 'allowing it'
have mint juleps as a signature drink at the CH and do it up...you know what they say, if you can't beat 'em....
eta...this might not be your style, but you could use this to your advantage if you didn't want to do a garter/bo-k toss or wanted to spice it up...
you could have the guys and gals place bets on the race...the winner takes all, OR the winners can be in the 'winners circle' and only they can compete for the tosses...

Thats a great idea! Mint juleps all around! And absolutely, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

I say make the best of it. If your guests are true fans then I think your FH is doing the right thing by having it broadcasted during your cocktail hour...at least when the reception rolls up all your guests are going to be satisfied that they havent missed the race and they'll be excited to party and celebrate your marriage. Dont stress it, I think it actually sounds like tons of fun!

Thanks girls - I think you're right that I should just embrace this and make it a fun thing, plus it will certainly be a unique addition. I love the mint julep idea, Jess - you girls are the best!!

Considering it only affects the cocktail hour, I would not worry too much...If you FH can get it broadcasted, that is great & once the race is over, the party will begin!

Re: The Kentucky Derby is during my cocktail hour!!
My grandfather was re-married on the K-derby day a few years ago. They had a TV in the cocktail hour. Alos, they had 60 guests, so everyone paid a buck and picked a number from 00-59. The winner was ther person who had the number corresponding to teh seconds of the time of the winning horse. People got a kick out of it. Then again, most of the people at the wedding were my grandpa's then new wife's (there are stories about her; let's just say it is a good thing she's not around anymore) crazy old cronies who were all llike 70 years old. My 2 youngest brothers were pretty young at the time (in elementary school) and they sold the tickets.
Anyway, the actual race isn't all that long and then the tvs can go away. Not the end of the world, only the people who are interested will watch, and like someone said, you come out smelling like a rose!

I love horse racing so I can understand the need to see the race, but maybe you can make it fun and have everyone pick a name of one of the horses out of a bowl at your CH and give the winners alittle extra something....
Amy
PS I love the mint julep idea!

I love that idea of giving people numbers! It's the cocktail hour, so it is the informal time. If it's important to FH, compromise. The volume doesn't have to be turned up because you don't need the announcers. How much has he gone along with because he's the man and the woman makes most of the wedding decisions?
