The LEAST Romantic

The LEAST Romantic

I read all of these great proposals and romantic things on here and it convinces me more and more that my FH is COMPLETELY missing the whole romance gene. In fact... I am pretty much convinced that my proposal was the least romantic in the history of proposals.

Here is how it went down.

Rob and I have done EVERYTHING backwards. We got pregnant THEN moved in together. Then had a second baby and THEN bought a house. And we really just never thought so much about getting married. It was kind of like ... 'why bother?'

My boss always harrasses me about getting married. He is a BIG fan of the institution. So one day I was joking around with him and said 'Tell you what... I will get married if you quit smoking!'. He quit right then and there. Whoops!

I get home and say...'Oh, by the way - we have to get married because my boss quit smoking.' and he says 'Should I send him a carton of cigarettes?' So I laugh and say 'Yeah... let's perpetuate his deadly habit to avoid getting married!' He shrugs and says 'Okay then let's get married.' I laugh and make dinner.

Later we are sitting together playing with the kids and he says - out of nowhere - 'Wanna do it?' I think he is talking about S E X and nod toward the boys and he says 'Naw.. I was talking about marriage. So you wanna just do it?' I say... 'Okay.'

And THAT, my friends, is non-romance at it's finest. But I still love him to death! Well.. I guess 'til death do us part!

Anyone else have a FH who is lacking in the romance department? Or am I all alone here?

Re: The LEAST Romantic

No no no - my dads proposal to my mom is worse (or better I guess depending on what side you are on). Here is the story:

My Dad is sitting on the couch watching the hockey game. My mom is getting him a beer (probably for the 5th or 6th time that night) and he asks her (while still looking at the TV) So, I think we should get married, it's time.

I wish I was there to see the look on my moms face! She was in such shock she said OK and went and got his beer. That was it - engaged! And because they were basically broke she didn't get a diamond ring from my dad until they were married for over 25 years!

And when it comes to ugly bridesmaids dresses we have NOTHING on what so many of our moms had to wear!

you're definitely NOT alone here, there are lotsa guys out there missing the romantic gene, they are also single right now. :D

j/k ... that may be partly true, but i completely understand what you mean, mine isn't the most romantic either, he's never planned anything for us that's remotely romantic. and until this day he still ask me everytime what i want for my birthday, xmas or anniversary of some sort.

pardon me but isnt the whole part of giving a gift the thought you put into it? why should i have to tell him what i want as a gift?

Re: The LEAST Romantic

my poor fiance apparently had this really romantic plan for the proposal, but it included taking a walk outside, and he idiotically didn't take into account the fact that a plan that includes a walk outside in December in Boston most likely isn't going to happen. So, he proposed in a pretty random and unromantic way, which I was kind of annoyed by for a while (it kind of felt like he hadn't bothered to try... I was kind of hurt by what felt to me like a lack of effort). I found out later that he had this whole plan, and that when he realized it wasn't going to work he even tried to get down on one knee in the middle of the restaurant parking lot where we went to dinner that night, but when he told me to hold on for a second I just kept walking so that didn't work (come on, it was cold out! and how was I supposed to know that he was going to propose?)

so, I got a pretty lame proposal, and there has been so much craziness in the time since then that there hasn't been a whole lot of romance. Sigh. We'll have to work on that.

lol... i tell him what i want and he STILL gets me what i don't want. HELLO? you live with me. have you not noiticed that i don't wear yellow gold?! EVERY piece of jewlery that he's gotten me, besides my e-ring has been yellow gold. don't wear it!
he is sooo missing the romance gene. valentine's day is my FAVORITE holiday and he knows this and what did i get? a cake. lol
and the proposal... so not romantic. i was home all day cooking and cleaning and was a sweaty mess and he comes home from work and just stares at me funny and tells me to come upstairs. i do, and he sits on the bed while i stand and then he gives me the ring. doesn't even say 'will you marry me?'
sometimes, i definitely feel jipped.

i understand. our engagement was kind of a blur. the first time he asked me was after sex. we were lying in bed and he asked. but at the time we were looking for ring. i was kind of mad, but there was other things going on. when he finally asked in the proper way it was very romantic.

How about this.... my dad put the ring inside of an issue of Playboy knowing my mom would leaf thru it... she did, she found it and they've been married for almost 30 years! CLASSY!

Re: The LEAST Romantic

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!

i FINALLY feel i belong. i've been to soooo many wedding sites, magazines, books and i was starting to wonder if i was getting married to the ONLY man in the universe who didn't care.

let me start with... my darling fh CAN'T KEEP A SECRET TO SAVE HIS LIFE. so i knew he was going to ask that weekend. key word WEEKEND.

ok, he shows up to my office on a friday to trade cars, he was taking mine for an oil change. i go to meet him in the lobby, to trade keys. i thought i'd bring him in the office so he could meet the girls.

right there outside of the elevator he says, 'i have something for you.' i knew what it was, but i didn't want it THERE, so i try to ignore him. he drops to one knee and says, 'will you marry me?' to which, i reply, 'of course, stupid. come in and meet the girls.'

i was so angry that he didn't wait for me to get home. when i do get home he's ready for BED!!!!
i told him (not nicely) that HE WAS AT LEAST TAKING ME TO DINNER. so we went to where we had our first date.

i felt so jipped, especially when i found out my e-ring came from sears. he IS SO GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE UP FOR THAT ONE COME CHRISTMAS.

that's my horror engagement story.

ps. he isn't much help in planning the wedding either. i must really be in love or really stupid

Re: The LEAST Romantic

My FH had a REALLY romantic plan for the proposal. We were supposed to go to eat then go to Rockefeller Center to see the Tree (something I LOVE to do every Dec 23rd for our anniversary) He got nervous and just asked me over dinner...I cant complain tho because i was still completely shocked at to me that was the best part.

I think there is no perfect proposal. I actually think yours is different and quite funny!

Re: The LEAST Romantic

I am freaking hysterical reading this thread it is GREAT! Rojerno- that story is so funny and cute. My FH is not romantic either but I think I stripped him of planning anything because I knew it was coming and I wouldve gotten anxious. I know, I know, I should learn some patience. I call him the ANTI ROMANTIC GUY. It stinks. When he gets drunk though he's romantic and he always tells me of his romantic ideas that just never seem to happen.....'I was GOING to take you to the beach tonight with a bottle of wine but when I got home you said you had a headache'.

my parents had a bad one too. . . my mom walked into the room and my dad was talking to her dad. . .and she was like what are you talking about and my dad was like 'i am asking your dad if i can marry you and he said okay' and that was that.

i mean it WAS 40 years and ago and in italy and they only knew eachother for a month or so before. . . it was rushed bc my dad was leaving for America. . .but I kind of feel bad for my mom!

my in laws didnt even have a proposal. . .they just knew' they were getting married and went to buy a ring and that was that - they were together since they were 13! but they have no excuse they got married only 25 years ago and in this country!

That is sooo cute!!! It really shows you how REAL you guys are as a couple. Most of that romance stuff they portray on tv is sooo phony. Good luck!!!

Re: The LEAST Romantic

FH's parents had a pretty good story too. They were dating for almost 6 or 7 years. He had bought a ring and she knew it because she picked it out with him. However he kept it in his drawer for a YEAR AND A HALF!!!! So one day they were at a bar and they were playing some pinball machine or something. So FH's mom says if I win we will go home and tell everyone we're engaged. So he's like 'ok'. So of course, she winds up winning, they get engaged and they've been happily married for over 25 years!! I love hearing that story!!
