So I just got off the phone with my FMIL...my mom bought her dress seven months ago - a deep blue (almost navy) gown, very simple, no beading and she looks great in it.
My FMIL knows what the dress looks like and has been procrastinating about looking for hers. She just calls to tell me that she found two dresses, one is navy and the other is plum. She wants to know if my mom would mind if she has the same color dress. Why would she even go with the blue one if she has any doubt AT ALL? She claims she likes both dresses equally. I really don't want her to match my mom - do you think this would look funny if she did?

Your mom should feel special that day too. I would ask her if she would mind...my mom does.

Well, first of all, I think it was very nice of her to tell you about the blue dress and ask your opinion. I've seen many MOB and MOG match. Some do it on purpose. But I would tell her to go with the plum. JMO.

I'd see if your mom was ok with her wearing navy, but if she likes the dresses equally then she should go for the plum to avoid any stress at all.....

I would probably ask to see them and tell her that you like the plum better (whether or not you do). She should not be wearing the same color as your Mom.

I would ask her to go with the plum dress also. The MOTB has first choice on the color and dress.

I would tell her to please go with the plum. You could go wiht her to look at them and tell her that the plum looks so much better on her. I'm afraid my FMIL is going to do this too. Everytime I tell her a color my mother is looking at she says. Oh, Me too.

Thanks for your help - I know you guys are right - I told her I would prefer that they didn't match and she wanted to call my mom and ask if she'd mind. I really hope she goes with the plum. Figures!

my mom totally minds, as do I... I personally think that it is tacky, unless you & FIL's made arrangements ahead of time that you would be ok wearing the same color. If she has another option then she should take it. Sorry, JM(harsh, yet)HO.
