Why depressing? I thought it had a nice ending? No?

If you're looking for something along the same lines...Memoirs of a Geisha by Samuel Golden was phenomenal.

I LOVED this book!!!

When I finished I wanted to flip back to page one and start again!

This book inspired me to go back and read the relevant sections of the bible. I was amazed at the creativity and research by the author. I then went and read her other book - but I was sooooo disappointed.

I'm a few chapters into it, I stopped reading it for happy books, but hope to get back to it and finish it.

Girl with Pearl Earring is a great book as is Poisonwood Bible.I also loved Honor Lost.

i agree about the author's second book. it was more of a beach read, then a good read. she normally writes Jewish life books, not novels. i hope that someday she writes a book as good as red tent.

If you haven't already read, how about She's Come Undone ~ Wally Lamb....and/or Wicked ~ Gregory Maguire?

I read that!! Now that book was fabulous too!! Walky Lamb's book after that was terrible, IMO..

Re: The Red Tent

Red Tent was great. I loved the sense of family it gave, and the bonding with women. I also read Memoirs of a Geisha and that was wonderful too.

For anyone that likes historical mysteries, I loved loved loved The Alienist by Caleb Carr. There's a few 'icky' parts (because they are cops dealing with the 'new' idea of forensic science - it's like CSI: New York in the Turn of the Century )
But I thought the writing was very good and kept me interested. His 2nd book wasn't that good, I thought but others I know that read the 2nd one thought it was just as good or even better.

I absolutely loved this book, althought I was sad too...... that it ended!!

Try the Girl with the Pearl Earring. It was similar although not as good as the Red Tent.
