So as I had said before I found out I'm allergic to gold. Never knew I was because I never had read jewelery before.
Took my ring back to Zales but there wasn't much they could do. They said if they dip it in platinum there is 80% chance my skin will still get a reaction from the gold through the dip and it will also be expensive to keep doing.
The other option was for them to use my diamonds from this ring and put them in another. I can't handle the idea of not using MY ring. Most girls might jump at the chance to pick another ring, but I can''t find anything that measured up.
So I walked out. I don't see in spending all that money on another band in platinum.. rather spend that money on the wedding band.
Now my other option is to keep wearing it on my neck and buy another ring in silver from QVC's Diamonique just to have something to wear. Still can't find the perfect ring, but I got time. I can wear my real ring for special occasions since it takes about a day to get a reaction on my skin.
You think it's tacky if I wear a ring from Diamonique?

Re: The Ring
have you asked your doctor for some type of allergy cream that you can put on so that you can wear your ring? or is this not an option.

I've heard of having sensitivity to gold, but apparently my grandmother is unable to wear gold either.
At first we thought I needed I higher quality but my ring is already 18K , my DR says I'm alergic.
But I will have to ask her if there is some cream I can use. I don't know if it will work completely cause besides my ringer getting all itchy & red it also gets swollen

That's actually a brilliant idea! I don't know why I haven't thought of that! I'd try it now but I left my ring at home today, couldn't wear it on a chain around my neck since I wanted to wear a new necklace today
But I will give that a shot tomorrow!

Re: The Ring
personally, i would trade in the setting and replace it with the same one in platinum. i know i would be really upset if i couldnt wear my ring everyday. think about all the time and money that went into it. is this an option??

Re: The Ring
IMHO...i would switch the setting to something to platinum as similar as possible to the current ring. i dont take my ring off. and i imagine the point of an engagement ring is to wear it on ur finger. it ***** that u have to wear it around ur neck. and its liable to get lost like that..........like if it gets caught on clothes or hair or something. keep looking for a different setting. i think its worth it.

Re: The Ring
if you take it off everynight...do you still get a reaction?
as for the diamonique. I dont think it's tacky. i begged FH to buy me a really good fake diamond...b/c i would have rather used the 10k for a trip. He refused...but I totally would have taken a fake : ) Some of them are so good you cant tell the difference

Re: The Ring
i believe that there is something that you can buy that you put onto the metal of your ring to protect your skin from it...kinda like putting clear nail polish on it. I dont know what its called but you can try to look into that... There is also the option of allergy shots but i dont know how open to that you would be...
If i were you I would wear the ring on my neck and get the Diamonique ring from QVC. No one will know the difference, just dont go crazy and get a totally blinged out ring, bc then, people may notice lol.

Re: The Ring
one of my bridesmaids has the same allergy -- she has to have sterling silver, platinum, etc and she cant have white gold or costume jewelery....
id try to have the same ring recreated, or hold onto it for your children and wear something different that you arent allergic to

Re: The Ring
I also have an allergy to gold (inherited from my father). I can wear White gold, which is dipped, but not yellow gold.
One Trick I was told is to coat the band of your ring with Clear Nail Polish. This acts as a protective layer between your skin and the irritant (usually the nickle I have been told) in the Gold.
Thats what my mom did with my Dads ring after they discovered the allergy, and he was able to wear his ring

Re: The Ring
Hey, it's better to be allergic to gold rather than diamonds lol Why don't you have a sterling silver band made and have your diamond set in it??
