The risks of voluntary Caesareans

Personally, I did not know you could have a voluntary Caesarean, I thought it had to be medically necessary. I found this article interesting though so I thought I would share.

Experts warn against voluntary Caesareans
Dangers include infertility, breathing problems for babies

LONDON -

Women are choosing to have potentially dangerous Caesarean births far too often and need to understand the risks of major surgery, experts said on Wednesday.

The guidelines warn doctors against granting Caesareans “automatically” on request, and suggested seven percent of them might be medically unnecessary.

“Of course labor is scary,” Louise Silverton of Britain's Royal College of Midwives told Reuters. “But women have got to realize this is major abdominal surgery.”

Britain’s state-backed National Institute for Clinical Excellence urged doctors to help reduce the number of Caesareans, saying 1.5 percent of all births involved the procedure without medical justification.

“There is increasingly clear evidence that the proportion of births by Caesarean could be reduced,” said Mary Newburn of Britain's National Childbirth Trust.

'Too posh to push'
But experts denied there was a rise in the “too posh to push” phenomenon, which refers to celebrities opting for Caesareans to avoid the pain and exhaustion of natural childbirth.

Overall, the procedure is conducted in 22 percent of U.K. births, said the NICE report, compared to World Health Organization guidance that the rate should not exceed 15 percent.

The dangers of the procedure include: infertility, bladder injury, and breathing problems for the baby. Caesareans can also interfere with breast-feeding.

“When I became a midwife 24 years ago, Caesareans were at a rate of 8-9 percent,” said Silverton. “Women are getting healthier and healthier, so why now do we now have Caesarean rates of over 30 percent in some regions?”

In the United States, there is also growing concern that voluntary Caesareans are becoming too common in the labor room.

In the U.S., Caesarean deliveries accounted for 26 percent of all births in 2002, according to the National Council for Health Statistics. It is the most common major surgery performed in the United States each year.

Many doctors resist performing the operation unless medically necessary, although the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says there is insufficient evidence that Caesareans increase the risk of pelvic injury or urinary incontinence.

Caesareans require a longer stay in the hospital while recovery can take up to eight weeks for some women, experts say.

Wow, that is very interesting to read. I always said that when I do have I baby, I want to deliver by c-section. For a couple reasons, one being a health reason, that I feel will cause me a problem with natural birth and the other reason is I am so affraid of pushing a big baby out. I guess I will have to seriously discuss this with my Doctor and DH when the time comes. Thanks for the article.

Boop - the risks are the same, if not higher for an emergency c-section, which I had. I say if you dont want to go through labor dont let anything deter you from that. Its your decision. BUT you should read up on vaginal birth vs c-section and decide from there.

I know articles like this are to make woman reconsider having a voluntary c/s but what about women who HAD to have one? I am having a repeat, already decided on that one.

Don't you pretty much have to have a c-ssection if you had one already? I have a friend who has her second c-s scheduled for next week (yay!) and she told me that since she had an emergency c-s the first time that she is at a greater risk for complications trying to push. I tend to think she is correct because she used to work for an ob-gyn and also because I know someone who had her uterus BURST while trying to deliver naturally after having had a c-s with her first child.

VBACS (vaginal birth after c/s) are more and more common. Yes there is a chance that your uterus could rupture after having one c/s but that chance is less than 5% I think... its some low number. In the past they cut you from belly button to pubic bone... these days its a bikini cut. There is less of a chance of rupture. I am choosing to have a repeat C only because I dont want to have more scars on my already riddled body... I cant touch my c/s scar now... imagine if it were other places???
