The Weight of Water (for those that have read it)

The Weight of Water (for those that have read it)

Who read it? I read it this weekend...it kept me interested, but I think it was always obvious that Maren killed the women and I expected a better reason why. I thought it would be in a fit of passion or jealousy over her brother's wife. Not just because she got mad at Karen.

I wish they would have explored what happened with Maren and her husband afterwards. Why was he suspicious, why'd she go back home?

Did Rich encourage her belief that her husband was having an affair so she'd have one with him? I thought the story was leading up to her doing something crazy too - like killing off Adaline or something (Adaline falling over was an accident).

I didn't follow how their marriage fell apart so quickly on the boat (though I understand their grief separating them...)

I read this book a couple of years ago - I have forgotten the details. However, I do remember that I really enjoyed reading it at the time. I like how it went back and forth between the 2 stories. They made a movie of it last year with Elizabeth Hurley & Sean Penn, and it is out on DVD/video. I hope to see it when I have a chance.

finally finished it. I thought it was good, but not the best. It was a slow read, and I actually didn't like that the author kept going back and forth between the two scenes - once in a while yes but not that often.

Lisa - I agree that the author didn't go into enough detail at the end.....why did Maren return to Norway and John stay in America and re-marry? Did they actually even divorce? Did he know for a fact that she murdered the women? He had a hunch, but did he really know?

I too thought there'd be a better reason other than anger. Leading up to the murder scene, I actually expected Maren to murder Anethe first, after declining her homesexual advances or something I figured it would be a bit more dramatic then the fact that she was there witnessing the other murder. (I don't necessarily blame Maren for killing Karen though - she annoyed me to no end! LOL)

I figured Jean WOULD have tried to actually throw Adaline off the boat - she was obviously jealous. I do admit I was completely surprised about Billie - very sad But did you find it strange that she *almost* had an affair with her BIL? Where did that come from? Just because she was losing touch with her hubby? She hadn't indicated any real attraction to warrant what happened on the beach at Smutty Nose.

Unfortunately, I am in the same boat as Annie - it has been too long since I read the book, so I don't really remember it very well. What I do remember is that I was disappointed in how it ended.

Anyone watch the movie recently? I rented it last night - it wasn't all that I imagined. Billie's not even a character! I had to watch the ending about 3 times, and I swear, I DO NOT understand how it ends! LOL

The whole movie wasn't that clear, even if you read the book first, so I can't imagine how lost viewers would be without reading the book prior to the movie.

I didn't even know there was a movie version.

yup - Sean Penn plays Thomas and Elizabeth Hurley plays Adaline. I don't remember hearing about it when it was in the theaters though.....

I saw the movie only and I did not understand the ending...
Elizabeth Hurley fell off the boat and then Sean Penn went to save her. I can't even remember what happenned next. Can someone please explain?

the movie is different than the book. In the book it ends with Thomas & Jean's daughter Billie falling off the boat and drowning while they were trying to save Adeline. I don't think their daughter was in the movie at all (but I didn't see it so I can't say)

Thomas was never having an affair with Adeline but he and Jean divorced soon after Billie's death.

Thanks! I want to read the book... it sounds a lot better than the movie.

They mention that they have a daughter, but she is back home. She is not on the boat with them.
