Thermometer

What kind of thermometer is good to have for a baby and young child? I registered for this one, it's an ear thermometer. Do I also need a rectal thermometer?

Re: Thermometer

I have the Braun Ear therm. but supposedly they arent accurate for an infant. I also have a digital with a flexible tip so I can put it under Emmas tongue or under her armpit without having to worry about mercury. So far I havent had to take her temp rectaly... I dont think I could do that, it just sounds painful.

I also have the ear thermometer which works fine. I know I definately could not do the rectal thing. I also got a binky thermometer which I think is amazing. Justin never had a problem with that and it was pretty accurate.

Re: Thermometer

I was told that the ear one is not good for infants because their ears are too small to get an accurate reading.
I do have that thermometer, Nina. We love it.

But you will need a tushy one also They are only like $10-$20.

So the ear one is good starting what age?

And, what do I use on an infant if not the ear one?

Re: Thermometer

You need a rectal for a small infant. Most of the thermometers are shaped differently than when we were babies, making it easier for a new Mom to know when to 'stop' inserting it. In the infant care class that DH and I took, they showed us exactly how to hold the thermometer to prevent it from moving once it's in, and it only should be inserted about 1/4 inch. It does not hurt them, it's just a little uncomfortable (for obvious reasons).
