This is a simillar ? to AMJA's about Maiter D tipping- IMPORTANT TO READ!!

OK- I was told by my hall and it is in my contract to tip $2 pp. Which I thought was absolutely fair. I am having 112 adults, 3 kids, 4 vendors. So 115+115 = 230. We were going to tip about $350.00 It's also a day wedding and we are not doing any traditional stuff.

I called the co-ordinator today to give her a head count bc we are paying cash and I need to know how many thousands to bring with me. She gives me the price and I say - that much? I thought it would be less? She tells me that the Maiter D's fee is included in the price but I am not paying tax or grat on it. Then suggested that I still leave a tip.

Has anyone heard of this and is it normal? Would you still leave a tip?

Honestly, when I go for the final payment and see what she gave that person- I am deducting that from $350 and giving her the balance. I just thought a 'tip' should be exactly that.

strange Our price includes tax and gratuity and we were told unless we felt it was necessary we did not HAVE to tip anyone!

The tipping thing is really driving me crazy..
there was a post earlier about the tip..
so here it is what I get from all other brides:
$3-5 ppl for you Maiter D
tip for you bridal attendent (My guess will be $150)
tip for waiter/waitress because they don't get any money
20% Gratuity is for 'Mystery Person'

So let say you have 100 ppl, and you are tipping $4 ppl (avg) =$400
$150 for bridal attendent
$ 40 for each waiter/waitress and if you have 6=$240
$40 for bathroom attendent (if you have any)
total for 100 ppl wedding:

$830 for tipping

Ugh sounds like too much to me... I wouldn't do the extra tip.

Matre d usually gets 3-5$ pp (my wedding planner told me) and he shares it with all the staff. I trust my Wedding planner -- that's her job

Its like I am know the tips are in my reception fee.. I am not paying anything else.. screw that..

the only person I would leave to tip is possily the photographer (which is rare) and the person who delivers the flowers..

Nic, I would not tip anymore if its included. Use the money for some Corona girl. Seriously, I wouldn't tip another 350 if they told you that you are already paying there tip. Especially not 350.

yea if you decide to tip it's at the VERY end, and if you feel they went above and beyond, especially if your halls policy is part of the gratuity goes to the MD prior.

This cr@p is just sooo confusing! Why can't they just give us a detailed list of who is covered so they don't try to Scr#w us out of more money!!!

Re: This is a simillar ? to AMJA's about Maiter D tipping- IMPORTANT TO READ!!

this is what I was told -- most halls require about 18-22% gratuity. This is a service charge, which includes valet parking and other stuff. In addition, MD in SOME halls gets a tip of 3-5$ pp. My hall mentioned the MD tip up front. Otherwise, I would say MD tip is discretionary. Your hall shouldve mentioned it up front, but I would find out if any of the waiters get anything from the service charge, because it is the staff I would not want to suffer.
Good luck!

I'm quite annoyed about the tipping thing too, because at our tasting the manager told us something different from what he told us when we booked. Which is sneaky. And I find it hard to beileve that a maitre d deserves that much in a tip. OK, so he only works those two days a week--what a great racket, then! Where do I sign up? I don't care if he works those two days a week, let him work someplace else the other three days, it's a ridiculous amount of money. I really resent places that charge a 'gratiuity' in the basic price and then expect us to tip everyone again. Then what was that 18% I already paid? That's what I need to find out. If it's going to the hall, I'm calling the Better Business Bureau, and possibly the county attorney's office, as that's false pretenses, and it's a LOT of money. Federal larceny level money, not petty crime.

Totally! You should determine the tip and it should be given at the end of the night AFTER you have seen how the service went. I think it is unfair for them to include it in the price before the party.

I agree, I think you should go over your contract because how can they tell you how much to tip, but I would not pay extra if they are trying to add it to your bill.

Are you sure they are classifying it as a 'tip' or are you confusing it with the service charge? They call it a service charge now because it has never really been a tip. From most halls I know (and I have worked in a number of them), you are paid straight salary, no tip - regardless of what the bride and groom is told about gratuity. My sis worked at a reputable hall as Maiter D and Bridal Attendant and she was paid straight salary - no tip off the top of the bill - if she didn't get tipped by the bride and groom, then no extra for all of the work she did.

Not telling anyone they have to tip, but remember that the 18% is NOT a tip, just a service charge.
