This is going to sound horrible but

Don't flame please...

If you had an e-party, did you make the money back on it?

I really want to have an e-party (hoping to find a place for under $25/pp for about 50 people)...but I can't see taking money away from the wedding budget. Practically though, I could totlaly pull it off if we make some or most of the $$ back on gifts. Then I could have the party with family and friends and not have to worry about it taking $2K out of my flower budget or something. I KNOW how horrible this sounds...but any insight?

ETA: I'm totally not in it for the gifts. we'v been engaged for almost 2 years and we want to finally celebrate it, but the reality is that it costs $$

we had an engagement party - we got a lot of nice gifts - but not that much money - i would not think you would make the money back - it is rare you do at any party

we did not have one, but I know friends that did and they mostly got gifts and not money. I would not hope to make the money back! Save it for your wedding.

My family is a cash gift kind of family though...I dunno

Re: This is going to sound horrible but

we had a pseudo e-party and did not receive one gift....we had friends and family over, I cooked a ton of food and we toasted our engagement with champagne. we 'gifted' our guests with dinner...they 'gifted' us by showing up....we spend a few hundred dollars...

like everything, it depends on what kind of party you throw. we went in thinking we weren't getting anything, and we weren't disappointed.

but wait....did you say you didn't want to take 2k OUT of your flower budget LOL- that's double my total flower budget!

I was just saying..at that point it would e the whole budget. I haven't even looked at flowers, I don't know what my budget is, but I don't think I could do it for 200 people at $1000.

Its very rare that you would make your money back on an engagement party - our family threw us a surprise party at a family members home - not everyone gave us money. We received actual gifts...we weren't going to have one - but like I said our family threw us a small little gathering...honestly...you're having the wedding to celebrate...an engagement party isn't necessary...especially if you can't afford it...jmo

I always thought this too - we didn't receive a LOT more on our party than we spent, but we had it in the backyard, and our mothers and I did all the cooking! No DJ, just beer, wine, and soda...and a tent.

Honestly, I think the E-Party is a waste. You can't expect to get gifts or to get money. You also can't expect people to 'fund' your wedding either.

You definitely will not make up more than what you put into the EParty.

I don't mean to be a 'Negative Nelly' but I've seen this over and over again. When having any party, you never really make up for the actual cost of the party or additional.

Good Luck Sweets!

No you're totally right. I know my mom and her relatives want to throw me a party in the house and cook..but the house just is not big enough to accomodate even just the closest people (we have such a big family it's ridiculous) so I figured having it at a restaraunt would make it easier on my mom. We could skip it altogether, and we probably will...but I just feel like we've been engaged for so long, and we've been through so much together, we should velebrate our engagement because it's been met with so much strife in a lot of areas.

ETA: Maybe instead of having either version of the party, we'll just take my mom and sister and BIL out to dinner and celebrate just the 5 of us...they've been so supportive.

I had my engagement party 2 weeks ago. My parents had it at a catreing hall and most of our family and friends gave us money. I got a few nice present, but I was very blessed with money.. I wasn't register so everyone pretty much gave us money.. I had 150 ppl and collected 9k. We made all the money back..

I had the time of my life at my e-party, but Jenn, in all honesty, knowing a bit about your situation, I'd skip it.

You have a little more than a year to go at this point - IMO, an e-party, shower, and the wedding itself will be too much to ask of your family, especially because the wedding is very near to the holidays, too.

I know you just want to celebrate your engagement, but the people that love you already have. Like you said, you've been engaged for almost 2 years - I don't know if I'd have an e-party at this point.

I'm really not meaning to be bitchy here, you know I love you - just being honest.

You're right...it's just annoying b/c we were supposed to have one 2 years ago, and then his family...and thena year ago and then my family. I think we'll just go out to dinner with my parents my sis and BIL and our MOH and BM a year to the day before the wedding ...
I just want to celebrate it somehow. Like, with everything we've been through, every time someone says 'i'm so happy for you' or 'you guys are so perfect together' i just want to cry because it's so rare, and I feel like everyone is against it.

WOO HOO!

Well, you know how Doug's family has been. Even his extended family. And my family is so involved in some imaginary competition. My cousin is like rushing for a ring out of her boyfriend so she can have some lavsh wedding at disney world or something, and they want to hear every detal about my wedding so they can one up it. I find it SO annoying.

ETA: I have this distorted sense of everything. My best friend said a few weeks ago that we're perfect goether and she can't imagine either of us with anyone else. and my jaw dropped. I thought she was lying. I didn't know she felt that way. I just feel like no one wants us to be together and it's a horrible feeling
