I'm 26 years old and up till now have gotten away with not having to slow dance. I want to look 'adult' and proper but FH and I have no clue of the placement of hands for both of us.

When dancing with fathers is it the same as when you dance with FH?

Any pointers?

I believe the 'proper' way is your left hand on his shoulder, his right hand on your back, and the others clasped to the side.

I dont know why, but I am so nervous about this....I feel like I'm going to look juvenile.

his right hand should be around your back on your shoulder blade/bra area. your arm should be on top of his with your hands by his shoulder. his left hand should be holding your right hand.

if you are practicing, keep in mind how big your dress may be (especially if you have a princess dress), and keep some room in between you.

relax.

if you guys are really nervous you can take a wedding dance class. they have private instructions.

I called Arthur Murray and one lesson will be $100. That seemed like a lot to me. I've been searching for tutorials on youtube and such and I've been finding some 'waltzy' dances. I just want the regular swaying first dance.

Your right hand and his left hand are up, your left hand is on his shoulder and his right hand is at the small of your back.

He is supposed to lead you with his right hand. He leads with his left foot, you follow with you right.

It is the same dancing with FH as it is with your father

don't laugh at me...after a bad experience with arthur murray, i started looking on youtube. believe it or not, there are a lot of good short video clips that show you from both the male (leader) and female POV. it actually helped us more than the arthur murray people did! just a thought! HTH!

I took dance lessons this summer!

Your left hand rests LIGHTLY on his shoulder and your arm and elbow should not put weight or pressure on his arm - he's not supposed to hold your arm up.

His RIGHT hand goes on your back, on your 'chicken wing' - our dance instructor called the shoulder blade a chicken wing. It totally made sense to me!

Your other hands are clasped together, yours clasped on TOP of his.

Posture should be straight - like you have someone pushing their fist into the small of your back to make you stand up straight.

HTH!

when we danced, I don't think we followed any rules. We had practiced a little more properly, with my left hand on his shoulder, his right hand on my back and us holding the other hands together. (that's how I danced with my father). But when the time came for our First Dance, we were just so happy to finally be together and sooo in love - we ended up dancing a lot closer. Both his hands around my waist and both of my arms up around his shoulders, because we were definitely hugging & swaying more than we were dancing. lol. It was really romantic, and I love the pictures we got after that.

We had no idea how to dance either, didn't even practice beforehand, but it worked out fine!
Your right hand holding his left (or vice versa) and your other arm on his shoulder, his below and around your back.
We just swayed back and forth, right and left... nothing fancy!
Don't worry about it, you'll do great!

And you move in a box step, you step back with your left, left with your left, forward with your left, then right with your right, he 'leads' with his right

try going to a regular dance studio and ask if an instructor will give you a lesson or two at a regular single class fee, I work at a studio and had a friend help me
