I am sitting here deciding how much to tip all the vendors and the total is over 1000 - I don't understand why I am tipping vendors so much for doing their job that I pay them for. When I go to work - no one tips me at the end of the day for doing my job.
Sorry if I offended anyone - but gracious a wedding is expensive enough

It does wind up being alot of money-just know that a tip is an offering, you dont HAVE to tip....though its the right thing

I am going to tip but when you start adding numbers together - It just seems like so much......................
I know every bride has had a moment when they looked at the total and couldn't believe the final cost

I agree that tipping is so much money. We went through the same thing with our wedding, but my DH is a DJ so I understand. Just remember when your tipping... alll that money your paying to that company most likely does not go to the person who is providing the service, unless it is the owner doing it personally. My DH does not get anything near what people pay the company he works for.

Yep. I'm at around $1600, and that's before limos/shuttles (which I haven't booked yet).
Some catering employee on The Knot (Planning & Etiquette board) just posted about how you should tip the servers (waitstaff), because the contracts are 'worded to make you think you tipped them, but they don't get that money'. Needless to say, he was not well-received.

I agree with you 100%, but the servers at the wedding really do need to get tipped because it is basically how they really earn their money. The others I'm not too sure of, but that's life we all do what we have to do and tipping is one of those things.

I felt the same exact way. I even decided at the end of the night that we were so unhappy with our DJ that we didn't give him the large tip we had set aside for them. Definitely plan of evaluating at the end of the night whether or not the vendors deserve that tip.

I was told that the service charge is simply to 'pay their employees' and does NOT include gratuities for the servers.
My Maitr'd told me to give him $2-5 per person and he then divides it between him and the servers.

BM and our contract basically said the same thing about tipping. The tips go to Maitre 'D and they divides it equally. It said $2 to $3 per person.

Re: THIS is RIDICULOUS
If the Maitre D is fair, he'll split up the $$, but you never know how much actually goes to the service staff. I've heard stories of Maitre D's keeping half, and dividing the rest among the servers. And even then, not dividing evenly.
We're thinking about calculating the tip on a per person basis for the RH. That's servers, kitchen staff, Maitre D, and Bridal attendant. It might be about the same money, but atleast we know it's going to the right people.

Re: THIS is RIDICULOUS
yeah... FH & plna to set at least 1000 aside for tips. FH is a DJ so I understand the reasons behind the tip... However, HOW MUCH depends on the service you get.

Re: THIS is RIDICULOUS
I know we overestimated a bit, but our tip count is at $2000, but we plan on doing 2 envelopes for each vendor. envelope 1: standard tip, envelope2: went above and beyond!
