This may be a silly question but.....

This may be a silly question but.....

Why does the Maitre D get tipped so much?

The amount people say they are giving astonishes me.

I read once that someone was giving like $500.
Why the hell did I go to law school if I could make that much in catering? haha

Its basically because they are there from start to finish to supervise and make sure that everything is perfect and the way you want it.

We gave a lot more than $500. We gave about $5 per guest. But he earned every penny- they oversee everything from the decor to the food to the timeline, etc.

this is why.

I think our plan is to go there with an envelope for a tip for around $7 per person for the MD and based on performance we may give it all to him or we may cut back a little.

I think it is crazy what they make in tips too! I know they do a lot for you but I still think it's nuts!

OMG so the 20% svc change that is added to your bill doesn't include the MD?

Well unfortunately I am not going to be able to afford a tip like that. In FSIL's contract the Matre D was tipped 2.50 a head. So I'm going to review my contract.

I think it's crazy too. We are proabably going to give $3 per person, but we have 250 people!!

I just want to say that I love your avatar!! I am obsessed with Bethenny and love that painting

I worked in the business and the hall will tell you that the Maitre D keeps that money, but in reality they have to submitted it to the management and only gets a small part of it! Dont let them fool you! HTH

the 20% service charge goes to the house ( to pay for bills and salaried people and back of the house staff) the matre d doesnt get paid from the venue that much money (usually its only minimum wage) and they work off the tips- just like any other bartender or server in the industry. and the amount of time they spend with you and orchestrating the whole event from front of house to back of house is amazing and most people would faint at the hard work that goes into it. ( I used to be one so I know EXACTLY what I am talking about)

It is also their job to keep everything in line, I personally wouldn't listen to all the extravagant norms.. go with what you think is appropriate...

Don't quote me then because at the catering hall I worked at the maitre D got paid well and the tip got put into a pool amongst all the managers, maitre D's, and OWNER and got spit at the end of the month.. I always thought it was totally unfair to the maitre D that they didn't get the whole amount they earned and unfair to the brides because the brides were always told that the whole amount went to the maitre D......

I worked in the wedding industry for over 10 years (wait staff, MD, & Catering manager) and most of the places it was this way. depends on how long the MD has been at the place, but most would split a little witht the staff and the rest was theirs to keep. As a banquet manager I always got tipped separate by the bride and groom

I'm not sure if they work completely off tips... or else they would be working off the books!

I had a conversation today about this w one of my colleagues... are you also supposed to tip the valet, bathroom attendant, bartenders, etc? I thought ALL of that (aside from the MD and BA) came from the 20% service charge...

they just might be off the books you never know!

I mean each place is different, most of the time the guests will end up tipping throughout the night unless you specifically say I dont want my guests to tip I will take care of all of them at the end of the night.

Re: This may be a silly question but.....

maitre'd part time 2 years ago while going to school... what so many people dont understand is that for most halls, the maitre'd tip is going (in addition to the maitre'd), towards all the people who assisted on the event... in every aspect... at most halls the tips are pooled & divided amongst the banquet managers who help you throughout the planning of the event, the managers who run the day to day operations of the hall, and the other maitre;ds. This is peoples livlihoods, its one thing if you were not told up front about tipping the maitre'd, but if you were told in advance how much you should budget to tip ...than we should understand that these are the people who worked hard to ensure the event went off without a hitch, these tips are there livlihood, and unless you had a bad experience or a bad wedding than you should be tipping within the guidelines that were explained to you when you booked your hall, again if they didnt tell you about the tip upfront, than that is a completly different story. How would you feel if you one week your pay check was significantly less? But it is most of the time the faults of the people who book your wedding, they dont explain it well enough & dont say exactly where the tip is going & the real reason they dont is because they probably feel bad asking you to tip them, even though only a portion of it is going to them. I think if more people just realized how many people & FAMILIES it effects when people tip poorly there wouldnt be such outrage at the recommended amounts people are quoted to tip.
