In an effort to provide input FH said he would like black table cloths and red napkins at the RH. so now I'm on a search to find examples so I can see..... Do you think it would look bad to have the black tables?? My dress is Ivory and the girls are in claret red w/champagne sash....and the guys will be in black tux w/ red vest and tie. I just feel bad cause almost everything he suggests I shoot down but I'm thinking maybe this one won't be so bad

Ok so this sitch I totally relate to. LOL. My Fh doesn't make many suggestions about wedding stuff and when he has (like 4x) I generally give into him because he is paying for a lot of it and yet he gives me free reign. But one thing we did lock horns on was the reception colors/decorations. He wanted all white cloths and clear vases and I wanted to stick with colored linens because our themes colors are bright and I felt white plates on white cloth would kill the festive feel.
Our issue is I am artsy. he is artistically a dud, poor guy. I love him anyway lol but NOT when he is trying to throw off my colors. I ended up winning that battle because it was more important to me than him and he let me have my way.
But as far as your scheme goes...I would say let him have the black cloths because the white plates will pop BUT!!! Add maybe a shampagne runner down the center if its a long rectangular table and two if its a rond table, so they form a cross. Let me see if I can find a pic of what I mean... I think that way its not all unrelieved black and it would actually look classy. What are your CP's like? That will also influence the decision.

This one is in red obviously but it gives you the idea-the red runner pops the white table and the Cps help bigtime too.
If you had rectangular long tables, you would use one just down the middle.

Here are some pics I found on the Knot..
I think depending on the way the rest of the layout looks on the table it could end up looking really classy and nice!!

What about compromising and having ivory table clothes w/a black (alternating) w/red runners and napkins?

I think this would actually look nice--set up a table how he would like it and see how it looks.

I think once you picture the entire table it makes sense. You'll have the place settings and centerpieces too, I think it would be very dramatic and elegant. Here is example with a sheer striped layer, just an idea!

Personally I don't like the look of it. It looks more sweet 16/bar mitzvah, theme party then wedding. JMO

it could look really chic.... but the way to play it up depends upon what your hall looks like...
if it's a modern room, then it's really easy.... could do everything in sleek lines and black red and ivory... inlcluding red tulips with black centers....
if it's a traditional room, you can mix the modern and traditional, with classic shaped items in more modern materials such as clear, red, and black glass and plastic.
I don't know how well you could pull this off if the carpeting is green or blue, though.... it sort of requires a neutral background...
