Those of you who have moved(or are planning) to/from another state...

How did you do it?? Was it before you got married, or after? What is your plan and do/did you own a home already?

DH and I have discussed moving to Florida and his 'plan' just is not comfortable for me at all so I'm wondering how other people went about making the big move. Did you have live apart for a long time?

I typed a long response and then got logged out. Hate that.

Here's the short of it. The move is more emotional than anything else - at least it was for me. I moved from NY to CA and back for an ex. and DH and I just moved from NY to NJ, not nearly as big a move, but emotional just the same.

My advice is to go there for an extended trip 2 or 3 weeks, see if you like the area you plan on moving to. Then decide.

Well, My dh (fh at the time) lived in NJ and I lived on LI..we rotated weekends. One weekend I went there, the next weekend, he came to LI. The weekends I went there, we would go house/condo hunting. Eventually we found a place and bought it approx. 6 months b4 we got married...We fixed it up, painted, and had most of our furniture in there by the time we moved in..dh moved in about 1 month before we got married. I moved in after we got married.

We both lived at home before we bought our condo.

Don't worry!! It all works itself out..I was really stressed prior to househunting on how we were going to do it..but, you have to take things one step at a time.

Hope this helped.. and good luck!!

we haven't moved yet, but we are planning to. Our tentative plan is for him to find a job there first, then go down and look for apts. Then I give notice and move, with or without a job. I'll work retail temporarily if I have to.
Eventually we'll buy a house, once we get a better feel of the neighborhoods.
I don't plan on being away from him for too long. We have friends that have lived apart for over a year, since the guy had trouble selling his business. I would never be able to do that.

Re: Those of you who have moved(or are planning) to/from another state...

I moved to Chicago, right after undergrad. The company I went to work for recruited at my school. So they paid all my relocation expenses and flew me out there. I met DH here about 3 months after I moved. And we've been together now 5 1/2 yrs. If we ever move, we probaby wouldn't do unless one of us had a job lined up. The job market is so iffy now that I wouldn't do it if there wasn't a job secured.

My MOH was relocated by her job from Memphis to Monroe, LA and they paid for everything. They put their townhouse on the market, when they couldn't sell it so the company bought it and gave them market price for it. They bought a house in LA, so she lived there while her DH stayed at the townhouse. My friend started her new job last March and her DH didn't move down there until the end of May. It was about a 5hr commute, so they would drive to see each other most weekends. It was tough for her husband to find a new job, he's been temping in the IT dept at a bank. They told him that they'd hire him permanently but no formal offer yet. Good thing she only has 1yr left on her assignment, so they can either move back to Memphis or go to another location. The good thing for her is that her company has a great relocation package.

If the move is a mutually decision for both then I think it's easier to do. But when you have to move bc of your spouses job there's always the chance that opportunities might not be available and the emotional stress of moving and leaving what's comfortable. My MOH feels guilty that they had to relocate when her DH had trouble finding a job. He was so miserable when he first got there.

We moved 3 days after the wedding. DH asked for a job transfer and we got an apartment in January to move in May.
We are very happy here, is a lot cheaper and right now is probably 60 degree outside.

My husband and I already discussed this and the plan is to move out of new york preferably florida. For us it will be a little bit easier since my mom will be there. she is moving next year since she and her husband bought a house.

we moved 4 months after we got married. WE had gone to GA to visit DH sister and her family and to scope the prospects. Ended up, DH got a job offer, we found a house we liked (but fell through). Went back to NY, told DH parents.....and a week later we were packing a Budget rent-a-truck with all our belongings. Our plan was to drive down, live with SIL for a bit (ended up being a month) and moving into the apt...it didn't work, so we found an apt and moved into that within a week of looking at it.

No realy plan..we kind of winged it all and went on Faith!
