Im a bit scared..about 1 week now my upper gum has become a little bit swollen..like a very small ball with pus.. I am not experiencing any pain its just a little annoying...but heres my question...do you know on average how much a visit to the dentist is? Any idea of what they will do? HOw much it will cost? What questions should I ask the receptionist when I call w/o insurance?

You will have to ask how much a visit will be without insurance. They should be able to work with you .. maybe payment schedule ! Have you been to this dentist before? Good Luck

I agree with the PP your dentist should be able to work with you if needed. Mine did when I was in between insurance. I just paid a certain amount monthly to them because I needed a emergency root canal. Hope you feel better and I would get it checked out ASAP.

hey sweety.. im sorry you're scared!..dont be
best advice i can give you, is to call and ask how much an initial consult is..usuallly they dont charge for an initial exam and xrays because they just want to get u in the door. after that, the dentist will not do any work on you unless he presents you with a treatment plan..so dont worry about hidden fees.
where do you live? maybe i can reffer you somewhere.

Re: Those of you w/o insurance...Question..
funny.. i had a similar issue with my tooth.. luckily i have insurance... it sounds to me that you have an infection.. if you can get your hands on antibiotics just take them and see how it is in a few days... i would call a dentist and explain what it wrong, tell them you dont have insurance, maybe they will work with you with a payment plan???
my case was actually way severe.. actually a root canal gone bad, fractured root, infection in the jaw bone... a complete disaster.. i actually had to get the tooth extracted.... TOTALLY RARE so dont freak out...
i hope is gets better!!!!

I don't have dental insurance- I have a discount plan- sometimes that can save alot ask the dentist you are going to if they support any dental plans- also care credit- you can apply online and it is interest free for a certain period of time and then interest kicks in...
I have careington dental

I have had those before. I would just gargle with salt water/ use some ambesol to dull feeling. It will go away in about a week. I don't think Denist will be able to do anything.

this is an infection and needs to be drained...you will most likely need a root canal...you need to have it done to prevent issues in the long run...not sure where you are...i was a dental assistant for 10 years and will recommend someone..it will cost 4 but you HAVE TO GO!

I'm a dentist - and I agree that what you are describing is most likely an infected tooth in need of a root canal. Once a tooth is infected, it is no longer 'alive', so it will not hurt. You risk either losing the tooth or having the infection spread (NOT GOOD ) if you don't go to a dentist. However, your prob could be many other things, including an infection of the gum due to something that got caught btwn the tooth and gum (most common: chips) or a vit. C deficiency. No one can know until they see you!
They should not treat you any differently w/o insurance - dental insurance isn't the same as medical. FM me if you want more details - I can give you estimates on what dentists in CT charge, but remember $$$ varies by location.
