I went to Ken James last night and they said that they usually charge a 10% fee but he immediately lowered it to 5% without me even asking. I have never heard of this type of fee. They say it covers transportation and their liablity insurance.

depends on the band - do they work for themselves or via a parent company? generally, those using a manager, just like photography studios, will jack their prices up to cover overhead costs. those who work for themselves do this as well, but at a lower rate.
whenever i deal with any vendor i always ask 'is this the final cost for all i have mentioned' and i get it in writing. the breakdown of administrative costs is transparent to me...

It is Ken James orchestras and the guy actually pitching the band is the guitarist in it. They are expensive to begin with but I have never heard of an administrative charge before.

Like I said in your other thread, we went with Peter Greco. PG's band used to play with KJ - but PG's band split off (or however the story goes). An administrative fee was never mentioned when dealing with PG - nor did I see one in our contract.

That's the cost of doing business and should be included with the fee for their performance.

I personally think it strange - NOT one band we looked at mentioned it - it should be worked into their final cost - NOT added ON to their cost

BTW that 10% --> 5% is a sales gimmick
some people may break down costs for you, some may not. the point is to get the TOTAL figure, what it includes, and you should be okay with it...
