If you chose to have your son circumcise, who performed the circumcision? My girlfriend told me her OB did her sons. I just found that strange.

Re: Those who have boys
My OB did it as well - as it's a surgical procedure the ped isn't qualified (unless he has surgical training).

My OB did it - as said above Peds are not surgically qualified.

Re: Those who have boys
Isn't this done when the baby first comes out? Sorry if this is a really dumb question.

Re: Those who have boys
I have to admit, I'm a bit dumbfounded by the women who are saying their OB performed this procedure! Not in a bad way, just shocked that various OB's have done this!
When Paul was born, the hospital pediatrician performed his circumcision, and yes - they are absolutely qualified to perform such a procedure! It is not 'surgical' in that it does not require an OR, or anestestia (sp?), so I don't know what you meant by that comment.
How much more 'qualified' is an OB - when their primary training is centered around a woman's reproductive anatomy and not a man's.
Sorry - not debating...these responses just threw me for a loop, b/c I thought it was 'standard practice' for the BABY'S doctor to do this - NOT the Mommy's doctor.

Re: Those who have boys
Jen, its usually done after 24 hours-sometimes on the 2nd day before you go home. In NY, it must be the OB-it has to be a surgeon. In some states., the pediatrician can do it.

Re: Those who have boys
Tammy - THANKS! I did NOT know that...b/c I delivered Paul in California. If I have another boy someday, I will be more informed and not shocked by this.
THANKS AGAIN!

Re: Those who have boys
No problem Claud. I happen to agree with you anyway. The OB does not have any other experience with male anatomy. The rational is why let peole who don't normally have a scalpel in their hands work on such a delicate little area. If the OB has a problem or does not feel comforatable for any reason, the baby goes to pediatric urology.

Re: Those who have boys
When my little cousin was born (he is now 12), he was under 6 lbs and the dr's in San Antonio would not perform the circumsicim (sp?) My Aunt had him circumsiced when he was just over a year and a urologist did it.

Re: Those who have boys
For people who are jewish, there is a guy called a moyal (sp?) who does it at a bris. I always wondered what kind of certification he has. He's not a doctor....

Re: Those who have boys
My OB did it the morning he was getting discharged from the hospital. You'd think it would be raw for a long time but it heals really fast.

Re: Those who have boys
My OB did it also . I guess most of them do it . They said I could request my ped. if I wanted -- but I liked my OB so I let him . It turned out fine...
