Thoughts on crockpots...

Original post by cc2011

This is gonna sound weird, but I have no patience whatsoever. The idea of a crockpot will drive me nuts. I also hate the idea of leaving my home while food cooks. Personally, I don't like to leave anything unattended while cooking.

Also, I feel like the types of foods cooked in crockpots I wouldn't make. Anyway, is there something I'm not seeing....FMIL and FSIL love their crockpots. lol.

Are crockpots meant for some people and not for others? lol....This is probably the weirdest thread I have ever started. I'm curious because I originally had a crockpot on my registry and just took it off.

I love the crockpot, but my mother has instilled in me the fear of leaving ANYTHING electric on when you leave the house. So I only make crockpot things on the weekends when I'm around, just in case. Thanks for the paranoia mom!

This!

Sunday is crockpot day!

I use my crockpot when I'm too lazy to cook. I only use it when I'm home...not a fan of leaving it unattended..

Otherwise it's great!!!

you can literally just throw things in them and its good. like, the other day i had no food and threw three chicken breasts w/ a can of salsa and it was like so good.

Get one!! i use it alllll the time, and never have left it on while i wasnt home.

All of our mothers must be friends -I also only use it when I'm home all day.
I like to cook something big in it on a Sunday and then have leftovers for Monday/Tuesday.

Would you say a crockpot is almost like a mini oven?

No!!! its like a big metal pot that as soon as u turn it on your job is done, and the meat comes so tender that you can pull it apart, like pulled pork

Who makes a good crockpot and what brand what brand would you avoid? Is Rival any good?

My Rival and Hamilton Beech ones are both great!

Personally I only avoid the ones with timers on them. Not a function I'd use b/c I normally have meat in it, and I wouldn't want it not cooking immediately.

I got a crockpot for my shower, WITH a crockpot cookbook.. I have no idea how to use it (or anything else in the kitchen) but everyone raves about them. I'm hoping the cook book helps and I can become crock pot material lol

Re: Thoughts on crockpots...

I grew up preparing the (very basice) crockpot recipes my mom chose... she used to leave it on all day while everyone was at work and school and it was never problem... that's what it's designed for. It's not any more dangerous than leaving your TV plugged in all day.

Like Jenni said, it's meant for people who want to come home to a meal, but it's also meant to cook things that take a long time that you wouldn't necessarily have time to cook during the week after work. Like a pot roast which takes hours. So you can have that on a Wednesday if you want, even though you weren't home to watch the oven all day. And it's easier to use than a pressure cooker, I find those things to be a PITA.

Yeah i have the rival one, thats 49.99, theres a new one w/ a spillproof lid that im SURE ill never need to use, like unless im bringing a roast to grandmas haha

youre gonna LOVE it.

Heres a little secret, get 6lbs of shoulder pork on the bone, and two packets of the bbq pulled pork slow cooker packets from any supermarket, i like , dump it in the crockpot and thats it, can i tell you that my FH thinks its my 'recipe' and the whole family is like, so impressed w/ my pulled pork. When i make it i hide the packets.. Its so shameful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ill never tell I get wayyy too much credit 4 it.

hahahaha
