Whip cream is not a choice b/c I am getting married in the summer & I want my cake displayed the entire reception!

I like the look of fondount, and I like the taste of buttercream, so tough call, but I think I would go withthe fondount just for the 'clean, crisp look'

That's what we picked when we did our menu. Those were my thoughts b/c we are also having a full viennese hour which will have TONS of desserts.

I agree with you ladies... I love buttercream, but you can't get the same look as you can with fondant.

I love the look of fondant (i've never tasted it) but am going with buttercream because FMIL and one of my BMs are deathly allergic to nuts and the fondant is made with marzipan (which is made from almonds). So I voted for buttercream...it's yummy!

Re: Thoughts on icing...
I wanted a smooth look too, I really wanted a chocolate ganache icing, but my baker couldn't do the ganache. But she said she can make the buttercream smooth, not fluffy/whipped looking on the cake, so I'm going with the buttercream. It won't be exactly as smooth as the fontant or ganache, but it will hopefully be flatter than most buttercream cakes. Hope that helps!

Re: Thoughts on icing...
We are doing fondant Our baker gave us a sample of how it tastes and it was actually good I was surprised. He rolls it out thin I had it once and it was thick it was nasty. If your baker is good you should not have any problems. just ask to try a piece

I like the way that fondant looks but hate the way it tastes...Buttercream is more 'traditionally' liked by all

I would've never guessed that was buttercream!
I'm planning on having buttercream on my cake, It's my favorite cake icing.
ETA: If you really want fondant though, go for it, by the time the cake is served everyone's stuffed and they don't get a huge piece anyway.

We had whipped cream on ours. I thought the same thing about it not being able to be displayed the whole time, but they said its no problem since its air conditioned inside. So unless your reception is outside whipped cream would not be a problem, if thats what you really want. Personally I don't like buttercream or fondant.

I love how fondant looks but it's made with gelatin which is a no no for my FH who is Muslim so we're going w/the buttercream. I would have never thought that Leslie's cake was buttercream, it's gorgeous...I feel much better now.

Re: Thoughts on icing...
I like whip cream but the cake I wanted couldn't be done with it so they had said either butter cream or fondant. I am not a big fan of buttercream but I never tasted fondant but I like the way it looks so thats what I went with
