Three Long Island Gas Stations Charged With Defrauding Customers

MINEOLA, N.Y. -- Three Long Island gas stations have been charged with cheating customers by overcharging for gas and switching regular gas for premium, authorities said.

Customers at a Getty Station on Atlantic Avenue in Baldwin said they ordered $20 worth of gas, but the attendant shut off the pump a dollar or two early without giving change, Nassau District Attorney Denis Dillon said.

The customers did not realize the shortage until after they left the station, Dillon said.

An undercover officer was sent to the station, and the shortchanging was caught on tape, Dillon said. He added that 93-octane premium gas was tested and found to be only 89.8-octane.

The district attorney said another station, the Gulf Station on Long Beach Road in Island Park, was selling regular gas from the premium pump, overcharging customers by 30 cents a gallon.

The third station, Fast Petro Gas on Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, also is charged with selling 88.1-octane fuel from the premium pump, cheating customers out of 34 cents a gallon.

Two stations have been charged with scheming to defraud and petty larceny.

The Fast Petro Station has been charged by consumer affairs with a violation of the agricultural and markets law.

People can report gas gouging to a hotline at (516) 571-6306.
