Tiling kitchen counterop?

Tiling kitchen counterop?

Does anyone have? How did it come out? Do you like it?

We got obscene estimates for a 3 different styles (granite, corian & formica) and we are thinking about tiling it ourselves to save a few THOUSAND dollars.

There is a place called Stone Depot in College Point, Queens that has HUGE discounts on granite countertops. I think they sell them in presized slabs, so if you have a basic countertop you could probably save a few thousand $$$.

my fi brother used granite tile on his countertop. i actually didn't realize it until his wife told me. the grouting was almost the same color. it looked great, and daved them money.

My mom moved into a house with tile countertops and eventually changed them because she hated them. She said it was difficult to clean - the grout was always staining from any food that spilled. It was an older home, so maybe there is a way to seal the grout, or go with a darker color. Her tiles and grout were white.

i have designed kitchens with granite and tumbled marble tile countertops and they look great and are not always cheaper then a regular countertop. if you do it yourself though you can save money although it can be tricky and if the tiles are expensive you might be afraid of waste.

I agree my Dh has his own tile business and is always syaing never to tile your countertops. it stains, chips and has to be resealed...

My DH and I tiled over our very ugle 70's formica countertop to give it a quick new look and LOVE the results! It was very easy. All we had to do is scuff up the surface of the counter top (we used a drill to gouge lines in it) and then mud and tile it. It isn't hard to clean (I'm a clean freak too so that was a big issue for me) and it's been 3 years and the tile have not cracked, or the grout hasn't come off. I will see if I can add a pic for you. I am very bad at doing it though.

Good Luck!

My FW just read this thread and she said never tile your countertops. Makes them almost impossible to clean. The grout will change color in time.

And i'll add the Kitchen is one place where you want to put your best foot forward and spend the extra cash for something nice. Kitchen upgrades always give you excellent resale value.

When I watch House Hunters, I'm always surprised at how many homes have tile countertops .. because I always think they'd be difficult to keep clean with the grout lines and unevenness of the surface.

It's hard enough keeping the tile clean in the shower .. forget about a kitchen .. unless you don't do much cooking.
