I can kind of understand the post office's need to increase rates - with gas prices skyrocketing the way they are. Luckily, I use email 99% of the time (except holidays).

It actually probably has more to do with the internet than anything else - more and more people are emailing instead of sending things thorugh the post and more and more people are paying bills and stuff online.

That's a very good point. I used to write a ton of checks each month paying bills. I do all my banking online now. I really don't need the post office to go out of business though. My hubby works for them.

I read recently that they came out of 'the hole' several months ago...and then increased the rate to $.39....it irritated me because the announcement came liek 2 weeks after I read the article about them not being in debt anymore....Not to sound mean, but my first thought was 'if $.37 got you out of debt, it should keep you out.' I have no intentions of fed exing packages at their rates either, but it just bugs me that the rate has gone up so much in really the recent years. it went up while I was pregnant in 2000-2001 and then again shortly after....most of the increases have been in the past 5 years.

i wouldn't want your hubby to lose his job either.

Thanks. Hey, and guess what hubby told me? 'Express Mail' by the Post Office? They have a contract with Fed Ex. So when you send it Express Mail - Fed Ex is handling it anyway.

you know if they raise the stamps then they will raise the cost of money orders and mailing costs as well

Did you hear about the stamps you can get that will survive a few increase - they cost as much as 1st class stamps...

Re: time to write our congressmen and senators!!!

it's all a scam....gas prices, stamps, avian flu(or any biological fear)...they should just say 'we want your money and for you to trust us with your lives...'

Am I the only one here that feels that 42 cents is CHEAP to send a document from one side of the country to the other?

Thats petty cash.

I agree. I don't want it to keep increasing. I think it's increased so much recently that it's annoying as heck, but honestly, mailing letters is REALLY cheap.

Ummm, there are a lot of better things to write our representatives about....

I would hope that we'd bother them with things like war, environmental degredation, drop out rates, poverty, etc...not the cost of a stupid stamp.

This is ridiculous.....how many times can they raise it

Re: time to write our congressmen and senators!!!

Supposedly there are bids from private companies to take over the PO. The claim is that there are inefficiencies, and that the government is misappropriating their revenue. I dunno how true it is, but I guess we'll see.....

And I do think that $.42 is cheap, but just like taxes it irritates me that they are incresing when the company can be run more efficiently. Furthermore, the monopoly prevents any competition from keeping the pricing down like the rest of the market.
