So, FH and I have been wondering how we can afford a honeymoon and we were not sure where to go. His parents have a timeshare. They use it in Florida every year and I have gone with them a few times. This past weekend when FH and I went to Foxwoods (he actually won a little $ for the wedding fund!), he told me that his parents said that we could use the timeshare for our honeymoon! According to him, we could transfer it to wherever we want. I am guessing there are certain choices. I don't know how this works! I guess we have to talk to his parents. Anyone else know anything about that?

Re: Timeshares?
hey! If you have the choice to use a time share thats a great option to save money on your honeymoon. My parents own several timeshares and we have gone on many vacations with them and I have no complaints. you should find out what company its with... ours are RCI and they give you this huge book of all different places and hotels you can transfer to, just be aware you have to book the vacation far in advance I wouldnt book it any later then a year in advance if you can. Also check if you have a floating week which is where you can pick any week out of the year to go away otherwise you might be restricted to a few weeks throughout the year where you can go away. I would also suggest using an all inclusive or buying a meal plan at the hotel because this usually saves you alot of money since food in the hotels can be expensive. Hope this helps! Good luck

Re: Timeshares?
Thank you! I guess I am just nervous because I will hopefully be starting a new teaching job in September ( I just graduated) and I was planning on finding out when the spring break of the district I end up in is to take a break. I don't want to ask for time off at a new job. Maybe we should just wait until summer for our honeymoon? It is kind of a long time to wait!

Re: Timeshares?
Swapping your time share can be harsh. You basically have to pay around $150 to put a 'search' on. You can request a specific island, or a specific area...or just pick your top two islands.
Once the search starts, they will call you if something opens in your requested area. You have 24 hours to say yes or no. (For instance, it may not be on the water, so you can say no.) If you say no, the search keeps going and they will call again when something else opens up.
I would definitely suggest doing the search soon. Dont think you will be able you open up the book and and pick the place and that is what you will get...doesnt work like that. But you can end up with something really nice and it will be free for you! I would definitely put the search on soon. (Also, just as a side note...if your parents own the timeshare....they are the ones that will be called when something opens up. They wont call you directly...unless you have your parents change the phone # on file.)
PS - We have RCI. Our home base is in Cocoa Beach, Florida. We have traded it several times...3 times in Las Vegas, 1 time in the Poconos, not sure where else.

Re: Timeshares?
Thanks for the advice! Can you tell them what week you are looking for and then have them call you for that week? I have to find out what FH's parents have. We also usually go to Cocoa Beach! I love it there. You reminded me that my friend had a problem because the call went to her FH's mom who did not want to say yes for them but then they lost it. Ahh! Nervewracking!

Re: Timeshares?
FH and I went to the Grand Cayman for New Years this year and used a week of my parents timeshare. We did our search by giving them that week and telling them to search all of the Carribean. We also used RCI, however, our timeshare is a gold crown so it was very easy to find a place. If you have a four star or silver crown its much harder (bascially you get ranked lower), esp during a holiday week. My suggestion would be to broaden your search and to read the reviews of the places you want to go written by other people - it really helped us out!
