I also live in the Bay Area (Sunnyvale) and we got married on Long Island 6 weeks ago. I wanted to share one tip with the two SF brides on the site regarding dresses.
I bought my dress out here (Bridal Galleria at the Embarcadero) and I had them ship it out to New York. Because I didn't take delivery in SF, they didn't charge me California sales tax, and the overnight shipping was actually less than the sales tax so I even got money back. Plus, they had exactly the right packaging for the dress. (My mom then took it to a dry cleaner on LI to have it pressed.)

Tip for the SF brides re dresses
One of the seamstresses on LI told me it is like $80 to get it steamed...is that right?? I think I am leaning towards getting it on Long Island..I just think they have better tailors and seamstresses, but thanks for the tip!! Where else did you look for a dress out here though??

To be honest, I have no idea how much my mom paid for the steaming. The rest of the places that I looked were down on the peninsula (Trudy's in Campbell, Unique Bride in Burlingame, Chantal Wedding Center in South San Francisco? I think). Since our engagement was only 8 months, I didn't have time to get a dress on Long Island & then go back for the fittings (you need at least 2, at least 2-3 weeks apart so they have time to do the alterations properly).

We got married on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend--afternoon wedding. We looked over Christmas vacation last year, and just about all the places we looked at had that date available. If you are flexible, there are plenty of opportunities.
By the way, we got married at the Harrison House--it was fabulous.

Do you mind sharing the cost? We're looking into the Harrison House for Memorial Day weekend next year.
Thanks
