Re: Tiping the priest??
Not typically...performing weddings are a part of their responsibility as a parish priest. also, i suppose it would be considered part of the church 'donation.' DH and i were personally very friendly with the priest that married us, so we gave me a personal gift (not monetary)

I don't know if this is true, but I heard it's actually insulting to try to give a personal tip to the priest. IF you want to give money, I heard you're just supposed to make a donation to the church.

I agree. If you want to tip your priest I hear the best way to do it is to offer it to the church as a donation. We didn't give any extra concidering we were already giving them a '$450 donation' to get married in the church.

Oh yeah, we are definitely not tipping the church anymore than we have to (we're already giving them $650!), but we're bringing in FH's childhood priest to marry us and he's no longer apart of the parish. He actually runs a special home for troubled teenage boys, so we're going to make a separate donation to that institution since he's doing such a nice thing by coming to marry us.

you girls got off easy....we're 'donating' $750.00 to have our ceremony!
We will make a donation in the priests name to either the church or to a charity.

Definitely not getting off easy. We have to pay the church $745!! I can't believe how expensive it is to get married in a Catholic church.

Is it really that expensive to get married in the church? Its funny that when I booked the Church $$ was never discussed. I didnt even think to ask. If its a donation then how can they tell you how much to give?????
cant you just feed him if hes going to be at the RH. That a good amount of $$

Re: Tiping the priest??
I think it's good to give the priest some sort of gift to show our appreciation... after all he is doing THE most important job of anyone the entire day. And the required donation to the church doesn't go to him.

Re: Tiping the priest??
We are DEF going to tip the priest. He's made the whole church part of wedding meaningful, easy for us & is a wonderful guy. The church donation $600 and the soloist, organist, ect is $150. So....along those lines....the priest tip should be....MORE.
If you're going to additionally tip the reception staff....over the service charge....
And it is not irrational to spend the same as you do an transportation on the actual ceremony (which is the most importanat part).

I heard this, too. But I've also heard that many priests gladly accept it. Personally, I think the 'offering' is enough

OH MY!!! i had NO idea church 'donations' were that much! I was thinking $300!!! wow! now my FH's uncle is going to marry us but hes a priest at another parish than where we are getting married -- will that cost extra to use a different parish priest?

This is what I thoght too. My sister had a deacon marry her, her DH is Jewish so the parish priest wouldn't do it, she gave him a GC for a restaurant. But again this was a Deacon, not a priest. Priests are not supposed to own anything, so I think a donation is the only way to go.

Re: Tiping the priest??
My uncle, a deacon, is marrying us. I am planning on giving him a gift cert. If it were a priest or other deacon, I would probably do the same. I don't think the donation goes in their pocket, likely helps pay the bills.
