Re: tipping
Maitre d is 2.50 to 3.50 times the number of guest you have
Bridal attendant 50 to 100
Limo ours is already included in what we are paying.
photographer - I am not tipping her I am tippin the asstnt, don't know how much yet
DJ--MC - about $400 there are 4 of them
hairdresser - she's my friend, no tip, she is doing all our hair as her gift to me
makeup lady - I would not tip
florist delivery person - They are charging me a delivery charge so I will see how I feel when my flowers gets here
All tips are based on service so I think in the end its your decision to make

Re: tipping
The one thing that I do have issues with is the amount that is suggested to tip the maitre d.
An ex of mine worked as a maitre d (in his place it was called captain) in a very well known catering hall for a very long time (probably still does), and I know for a fact that maitre d's make good money, and while there is nothing wrong with tipping them, they certainly do not warrant the size tip that you all are talking about giving.
I'm just curious, does anyone know why they are 'supposed' to tip this person so much? Or does everyone just do it because that's what you have been told to do by your catering hall and your friends? Does anyone know what this person does to justify giving them $3.50 per person attending your wedding!? I do, and I can assure you that this is a form of brainwashing in the catering industry. Do you realize that for an average sized wedding you are talking about tipping this person over $500!
I am speaking from personal knowledge. Now maybe the hall that my ex works in works differently from other halls as far as the role of the maitre d, but I doubt it. Like I said, this is an expensive, well-known and well-respected hall.
Sorry about the 'vent' but this is one issue that I have a problem with. Once again, I am not saying don't tip the maitre d, I am saying, don't get so carried away with it. Make the decision based on how well that person did their job on the day of your wedding. Remember, you are paying the hall alot of money to do the right thing by you to begin with.

Re: tipping
Well, I actually have to find out how much to tip the Maitre D' at my CC, but when we were originally booked at the Port Jefferson CC, it was only $1-2 per guest.

Re: tipping
in my contract, it says something about suggested maitre'D tip being 2$ pp, for a total of 400 since I'm having 200 people. I don't think this means I have to pay this, but it's actually written out for me.

Re: tipping
We are tipping our priest since he's coming from another parish to celebrate our wedding. We are tipping our maitre d' only $1 per person, and we'll round up to the nearest dollar. IMHO, I think anything over $2 is a bit much. I don't think we're tipping anyone else.

Re: tipping
Ladies,
I had trouble with this one, so I'm going to list what we tipped on our day. My husband and I were writing envelopes out the day before, we were both so disgusted by how much we shelled out in tips.
Maitre'd - $400 (200 people) Bridal Asst - $75 Band - 9 members (we decided to give them cash instead of food, so we gave them $40 each - $400 total) Flower Delivery - $150 (2 people - $75 each - they put your centerpieces together, so be careful on this one). Photographer - $130 plus dinner (to much for my taste, but he did a great job, plus it's what they recommended) Photographer Asst - $70 plus dinner Video Asst - $100 plus dinner (2 people, $50 each - but I wish I gave a little more - they did a great job, atleast I think) Videographer - no tip, only because it's friends of family and the bill was large enough already! But dinner, of course. Priest - no tip, because we paid him straight (that money is all his), plus we treated him to breakfast 3 times!!!!! Ceremony music - no tip - because that money is all theres too - no middle man. Steel drums - this was hard, but we didn't give a tip because we felt that they were getting a lot for the one hour. Hair - gee, I don't know - but everyone was giving her money - so she probably walked away with $50 in tips!!! I think $20 alone for my hair - which is alot. Makeup - my bridesmaid took my money and tipped this one, but she gave less than I wanted - but it worked out because she came to the wedding - so we paid for her dinner! I probably would have given her $15 - $20 otherwise!
I think that's it!

Re: tipping
Each of our vendors are getting dinner and I am sure they still expect tip.
Tara, I agree with you, that is what is suggested, but if he/she treats us like crap you can bet he/she will not get that kind of money from us. I do not have it like that to just be giving out money like that, you have to earn mine.

Re: tipping
I have to add thet my mom is and has been a maitre d' for over 20 years and they do not all get paid well! I guess it may depend on the place but I know she does appreciate tips. It does not have to be as much as people say but $100-200 is very nice.
Often, the maitre d' may pool this with the waitstaff. It depends the place and the staff and I guess if the people leave a tip for the waitstaff.
I always recommend tipping the waitstaff. They get paid cheap and (often) work hard. I have helped my mom as a waitress and it is hard work and you come home with no money. Whenever I attend an affair at a catering hall I always tip the waitstaff at least $5-10 depending on the service. They are always very thankful. It's strange because the bartender always makes tips at catering halls (if the party allows this) but no one thinks of the waitstaff. I know in a lot of contracts the waitstaff tip is suppose to be included. Usually you get like $10 added to your $7-8/hr.
Just my opinion based on my family experience!

Re: tipping
Bridetobe - I understand your point, but that leaves the question unanswered that has been brought up MANY times on this board... What does the 18% gratuity charge go towards??????? (not taking this out on you, I'm just really curious about it.) If it's not going to the waitstaff, and it's not going to the maitre'd, then where is it going?? Thanks!

Re: tipping
You must be reading my mind Marnles. I think B2B is only speaking from her mom's place so I guess we are all still stumped on this 18% That is a large amount of what we have left to pay of our final balance and they want it in cash no less. I would really feel good to know it is going to the people who do the work and the running around on our day and not just the hall. What is the Maitre D's job tho' I do not know why we have one?? what do they do??

Re: tipping
IMO - the maitre'd is there to make sure everything is going smoothly overall. But if the bride or groom need ANYTHING, then he/she is supposed to take care of all their needs. Granted, an important job, but to earn $300 - $400 for 5 hours, in addition to their salary, as high or low as it may be....hmmmm....I think I'm in the wrong profession. That's like the whole $300 for valet (with only 2 drivers)....again, I have my masters and don't make that much. Without getting into detail, my hall has been quoting my stupid contract to the word ever since the man we signed with quit - I think I'm going to start doing the same by asking IN WRITING...where EXACTLY does the 18% gratuity go to?? How much to waitstaff, how much to maitre'd, how much to YOU...

Re: tipping
Aren't we already paying the hall itself thousands of dollars to make sure everyting runs smoothly? Why do I have to pay an additional 400 or 500 to ensure that? I mean what am I paying these people for?

Re: tipping
Tara- I couldn't agree more BUT is it worth risking poor service for a few hundred dollars?
I know its insane but what choice do we have?
PS: I applaud you for not booking a vendor who has doubled their prices due to the free press they receive here ( i saw you mention that on another post). I have done the same.

Re: tipping
I have been wedding planning full-force for 8 months now. Certain things are really getting under my skin. How dare someone double their prices and take advantage of us brides. If you want to raise them- fine. But double them? What nerve.
The maitre d thing and the Kristen thing are just two of them.....the list goes on and on.
