I was informed that you don't have to tip a vendor if they own there own company, but you should tip their employees. Is this true? My photographer, videographer, wedding planner, DJ, and florist all own their own companies. There will be a few of their emplyees there that night...so I tip the employees and not the owners? I don't know....and the tip money is ridic, its so much. Don't know what to do!!!!!!!!

I feel like they still provided a service and if you are happy with it, you should tip them. They don't get to keep all that money because they have a huge overhead most of the time...office space, employees, etc...
Tips are never required, but they are always appreciated I think. Just use your best judgment! GL!

Yeah it’s true that you don’t tip them if they own a company but yet if you are satisfied with their service you can tip them.

My florist, DOC, and photographer are all the owners of the company and will be the one's either setting up (florist) or will be with me all day. I will be tipping them with out a doubt.

I've heard this said before on this site, but I myself do not agree with this. Each of these vendors are providing a service to you and I think if they do a good job, they deserve a tip whether they own the company or not. As said above it is not required but always appreciated.

I asked the same question of a friend of mine who was married recently. She said the same as some other posters that even if they own the company, if you are happy with their service then tip them. My photographer owns her company and I plan on tipping her.

I tipped every vendor I used, owner or not. You don't have to tip anyone if you chose not to.. it's a way to thank them for providing a service to you.

This..I don't think ownership should be a determinant

Re: Tipping?
I'm always awkward about tipping owners.
For my wedding we worked with a lot of owners.
I handled my tips like this - I gave ONE tip envelope to the owner and it said for example 'FM Entertainment - Thank you Frank and staff'
That left it up to the owner how much of the tip to keep for himself and how much to give to his staff. I know there's a risk here that the owner would keep it all, but I have to trust

I might be the odd ball, but I don't think you need to tip the owner of a company and I think its very unprofessional if the owner accepts the tip. I like your idea of giving one envelope to the owner that way the onus is on them to split it as they see fit (hopefully they would do the right thing and give it to their employees only). That's just me, that being said we will still most likely tip everyone (owners and operators).

i would tip an employee of a vendor but not the business owner. Same as when you go to a restaurant, you tip people that serve you in some way but not the restaurant owner etc.

If the owner of the restaurant was serving me, I would be tipping him or her, why wouldn't I?

I know money is not supposed to be talked about... but since you asked, I am very up in the air about what to tip my vendors. I was thinking $100 each? Is that ok, too little or too much. There is so much to consider...
What are other people doing with tips?

here's Martha Stewart's tipping guide. If you are using a DOC they also have a tipping guide.
I think some of the tips on there are crazy. 15% for a photographer! That could be close to a $1000 tip.

Re: Tipping?
All of my tips were in the $100-200 range per vendor.
Actually I think we only gave the organist $40, but the major vendors got more

Exactly if the owner is the one rendering the service for you then I don't see why they shouldn't be tipped. JMO.
