Ours didnt accept a tip, but he also owns his company. How long is the shoot? With services I go by two rules (depending on the kind of service): 20% or $10 per hour. For the engagement shoot I would do 20%. I think our photographer charged $450 for an engagement shoot (not sure the average price but I would guess about $300-500).

Also, he may bring an assistant...Ours did - just something else to keep in mind.

I think our shoot was $250 extra from the package we picked. I am not sure how long it is.

I tried tipping my photographer after my engagement pictures but she kindly denied. We will try tipping again after the wedding.
