Tipping for Impromptu Engagement Session?

Tipping for Impromptu Engagement Session?

Okay, so our photographer messaged me on Facebook asking us to do an impromptu mini engagement session in-studio with him. He just acquired the space next door to the store front and made it a studio and I guess wanted to gain portaits for his portfolio or whatever. Plus we've given him the business of four different weddings (all high school friends of mine that saw my engagement pics on facebook and loved them) since booking, so he said it was a 'thank you'. SO we go, have a great time, he tells us it'll be a 20 minute mini session and it turns into an hour and a half with over 200 beautiful pictures in the end. We didn't tip him for our initial engagement shoot because A) we'd paid so much for it to add it to our package when other photogs included it B) he's the sole owner of the business so he reaps all the benefits C) we're planning to tip him on the day of our wedding. But since this was a surprise and so nice of him and we got such gorgeous pictures out of it, FH feels like we should have tipped him. So now we're going back and forth about writing a thank you note (which we're doing regardless) and including money or not including money. What would you ladies do?

Was this Florio? He's so nice!! That's awesome that you got a free shoot. I would suggest just giving him a little but more in the tip at the wedding. I don't think he expects a tip now.

Yes!! He is the nicest lol. He was really thankful for the recommendations that resulted in so much business! That's what I was thinking.. Maybe giving a little extra in his tip for day of.. Hmmm...

I always think that if you are going to tip (extra especially) it's not a bad idea to do it before the wedding day because then you know you'll get his best work on the day. Just a thought.
