Just out of curiosity...how many of you actually budgeted an extra 500-1000 dollars in your budget for the Maitre D tip?
That seems quite high to me...but then again- this IS my first time planning a wedding so...

Is that in addition to the percentage of bill thats listed as 'gratuity'? Or does your RH not include gratuity?

Re: Tipping Maitre D
i heard a dirty little rumor that gratuity isnt actually gratuity its a service charge.. that if we dont tip the wait staff they get paid like a basic salary.. im curious about this too because we have to tip the maitre d AND the wait staff doesnt get a piece of the gratuity...

my maitre d told us that the 'gratuity' on the contract is indeed a service charge. we are tipping her (based on her service) 3-5 dollars per head.
she will use the money she gets to tip all staff.

I was wondering this too... my RH charged tax and gratuity and i was wondering what the gratuity was for and if it went to maitre d?
I was budgeting $500 for a tip so I guess thats too low?

This is true. although your MD was being nice becuase usually you tip the MD and then you give like a little extra for the rest of the staff, like the waitiers and the bartenders, because the MD doesnt usually share her/his tip ... all other tips are seperate.
There was a good tipping thread, let me see if I can find it

Re: Tipping Maitre D
i asked my bm when i signed the contract about tipping the wait staff and he told me it was included in the 'service charge' and that i will only be responsible for tipping the maitre d and the bridal assistant on the day of my wedding... but one of my gfs told me that her bf used to be a waiter at a hall and they do NOT get a portion of this 'service charge' i have no idea who is right...but i guess i'm likely to set aside 3-5 per person for the maitre d and another 1-2 pp for the bridal assistant? i should probably include a tip for the waitstaff if i ever find out if they actually do in fact get tipped from us? or from the 'service charge'

the bridal assistant is seperate, so she usually gets like 50-100 bucks. I heard the same about the waiters, so sad
