Tipping Maitre D

My hall has a 20% gratutuity charge. Based on many of your posts I see that many are tipping the Maitre D in addition to this charge. Why is that? Is he not included?

Re: Tipping Maitre D

The 20% usually includes waiters, bartenders, etc. The Maitre D is usually tipped above this because he runs the whole thing and makes sure everything goes smoothly. It's usually between 3 and 5 dollars per person. Hope this helps!

exactly, the maitre'd doesn't get that 20% gratuity you pay to the RH. We tipped our Maitre'd and from what ive seen just about everyone else does.

Re: Tipping Maitre D

THis is so annoying to me -- I would almost rather them build in the price so I don't have to deal with it that day but I guess it's good too because they need to work for their tip and you give them what you think they deserve based on service. I have a set amount I am thinking -- like $3 per person for 225 guests -- and it's sooo much money to be paying out that day! I feel like we will be paying out like over 1500 in tips that day in total. CRAZY!!!

Re: Tipping Maitre D

dazey - i'm a TC bride too.

that $500 charge is a service charge - did they tell you it goes to the maitre'd only??

Toniann just told me that that was for the other waitstaff for the day, so the $2-3 more per person is for the m.d.

Re: Tipping Maitre D

I asked at our rh about the tip for the md and was told it goes not only to him but to the other staff not included in the other gratuity which would include the kitchen staff. confusing definitely!

I agree! Most of the time they aren't doing as much as you think anyway. They are telling people what to do! You tip what you want to tip. I know people who make envolopes but dont seal them. You dont tip until the end so you choose. If they are great tip. If not then don't give as much.

Re: Tipping Maitre D

For our contract it states the 20% includes everyone but the Maitre D. We've read several posts on here that its customary to tip the MD $1 - $5 pp.... Its a pretty vague range...

it says maitre'd mandatory tip, but what you're saying makes more sense so i'm a little relieved.
