tipping priest

Hi ladies...hoping you can offer some feedback. We are getting married in a catholic church and FMIL and FH swears that we need to tip the priest even though every board that I look up (and my DOC) agree that you dont do that. Its a religious mass and in bad taste...thats what I thought. My mom tipped the priest back in the 70's but whats the proper thing to do now? The night of the rehearsal dinner I was told to bring the check for the church and the altar service tips..thats it. I also planned to tip the organist on the day of...

Did you guys tip your priest????

I didn't even think of it. I'll leave that up to my parents. I too think it's a little weird to tip a priest.

Yes. I think it is odd too but I guess I will probably do it.

I thought we only tipped altar servers (if any).
I never knew to tip a priest.

Hmmmm, don't think I'll do that. I'll send a fruit basket after the wedding to the Clergy residence....too weird to tip the priest.

yea..i agree about the bad taste thing...I am not gonna do it. If anything..I may send him a gift basket after the wedding with a thank you note

I've heard that you normally make a donation to the church if you are being married there, but what if the priest is marrying you at a different location. Do you still provide him a donation for his time? Or maybe a nice gift certificate or something like that? I know my sis gave her pastor a $500 gift certificate because he married her on his wedding anniversary, so she gave it to them for an anniversay gift.

I did not tip my priest, and I didnt think it was something I had to do to be honest. the 'donation' you are required to give, some of it usually goes to him anyhow...

I know your priest... he's marrying me also... don't tip him, lol. If you want to get him a gift or something get him some little token of appreciation and have it sent over to the rectory the next day or something. Priests aren't supposed to be about money.

I think you're right about the alter servicers...the whole thing about the 'donation' seems wrong but whatever

How nice! I think you are right...tipping a priest just seems wrong on so many levels..lol I will send him something to thank him though. He really has been great.
