Tipping the owner?

Tipping the owner?

The owner of the dj company I'm using is MCing my reception. I've heard that rule about not tipping the owner so do I still tip him or should I just tip his assistant?

I would tip just the assistant. If he goes well above and beyond his job on your day then I would tip him also.. but just for doing is job where he is already making all the $$ you spent as profit is enough. - IMO

I feel regardless if he is the owner or not, if he does a great job, he still deserves a tip

I guess it's just me, but I think it's our vendors jobs to do a great job. Anything above and beyond that warrants a tip.

I think owners get enough of a cut so I personally wouldn't tip an owner.

Well I DJ... and I guess I am the owner. I didn't get tips from every gig ive done... I guess because of the 'tipping the owner' thing.

But I definitely always appreciated a tip, and i've gotten my share. If the guy goes above and beyond... a tip would be nice... even if its something small. Saying 'here is a little extra for you' included in the payment is a cool way to do it.

'Oh he is an owner and getting all the profit'... shouldn't be a reason not to tip. You don't know what kind of overhead he has and how much profit he is actually making.

I disagree. When setting the price, the owner knows the overhead and sets the profit he would be making accordingly when he sets the price. He makes a profit when he sets the price.

As a general rule, I don't tip owners. If they do go above and beyond, I will give a tip.

Yeah, I definitely agree about the 'above and beyond' rule... nobody should get tipped for 'average' work. But what I said above is YOU don't know what the owner's profit is. You also don't know what his overhead is. Yes the owner obviously knows this and sets his price accordingly... but its not like the owner is going to advertise how much profit his is actually making.

Here is a stupid example of what I am talking about.

A DJ working for DJ Company 'A' might be making $300 buks a gig after taxes (the company charged the client $600 for the gig). He has no overhead because the company pays for this and he just brings himself.

Whereas a DJ working for his own company DJowner.com may charge $600 for the gig... but has a $300 overhead for that gig (pay for his 'roadies / assisstants', lease of music equipment, purchase of music, gas, van rental, parking, etc.)

Now keep in mind thats a very *rough* example. Both DJs come out with a $300 profit... yet according to most people here... only the DJ that works for company 'A' would be eligable for a tip because owners shouldn't be tipped. No offense.... but speaking from the 'owners' side of it.... thats a silly way to look at it.

The best way to approach tipping... is to tip anybody that as you said goes 'above and beyond'. Thats the fair way to do it. If you are totally against owner tipping... then maybe don't tip the owners as much as the workers. But don't stiff them either.

Most likely it will be the owners that are going above and beyond the call of duty cause they have their company image to protect.... as compared to a lackey worker that might have had a bad day and just doesn't give a crap and works the day with the attitude to 'just get by'.

And just as an FYI... I *never* advertise anywhere in my contracts or when speaking to a client.... that tipping is optional or anything that encourages people to tip. If they don't tip at the end of the night... its no big deal cause ill be honest... my overhead is minimal. If they do tip... thats something extra and makes me happy cause I know for sure this client really appreciated my work.

Usually what i'll do... which happened in my last Wedding... is I played for an extra 20 mins past the reception time cause the party was hot, people were dancing, and I am sure they wanted to keep it going. I didn't just 'cut the music' cause I wanted to go home. I continued to play and they took care of me after it was all said and done. Both parties were happy in the end. I still talk to this couple to date... as I am asking them for reccomendations to wedding vendors since I am getting married too.

I hope this helps enlighten some views on here in regards to owner tipping.

Sorry, but I still don't believe in tipping the owner.

To me owner or not doesn't matter. If they are good and do a good job I will tip them. If I don't feel they went the extra mile for me they get nothing. Simple!

That is my thought exactly. My photographer, videographer and MC are all the owners of their company and I am going to be tipping them all.
