tipping/gratuity

tipping/gratuity

So I wanted to know how the tipping thing works exactly. We are paying an 18% Service charge and were given the guidelines of tipping $3-5 per person. Who do we actually tip the $3-5 a person to? No one in my family has ever had a wedding on Long Island so no one can help me with this one and is just as confused as I am. And who is getting the 18%? We thought that was the tip and then were told about the other tipping.

Also, any idea how much to tip a DJ? A makeup person? Bridal attendant? Photographer?

Thank you ladies!!!

I would call your hall, we were told it was not necessary to tip our waitstaff b/c it was included in the total for the hall.

I think the 3-5 per head is for your maitre d or your banquet manager...not sure which though sorry.

There is a tipping guideline under planning I think.

I dont think this will be much help but I was told by one of the RH I went to that the 18% does not cover the tip for the Maitre D and that they reccomend $2-3 pp.

What do you usually tip everyone else? (Florist, DJ, photographer)....

From looking at past boards, this is a touchy subject. We were also told the norm is $3-5 per person to your Maitre'd. And that is what we did. The only other person I tipped was the bridal attendant and the DJ. Not only are wedding's expensive, but now they tell you how to tip, it's outrageous.

I'm thinkin the $3-$5 a person is for the maitre d'. We were told between 2-3 and we ended up giving a little bit more than $3 a person. We tipped the bridal attendant $100, the DJ and MC $50 each, and $100 for the photo asst. We didn't tip the photographer because he was the owner of the company. HTH

The $3-5pp should not be for the waitstaff (but call your hall to verify this!). Like others said, it should be for the matre'd.

I have a question now... is your BM usually your maitre'd?!

As far as I know it's not. However, BM's don't get tipped because they get a percentage of your booking.

My RH suggested 3-5 per person.....that would be like almost $700 bucks?!!?!?
Thats based on 3.00 a person....I love how they say its recommened this much BUT its at your descresion (SP?)

We're paying ALL this money to use your RH and you want MORE money!?!?

Re: tipping/gratuity

I was told by Jericho Terrace to tip the maitre d' anywhere from $800 - $1,000. He did tell me that the tip is split between the maitre d and bridal attendant(s).

thanks everyone for the info!!!

Why does the matre D get the biggest tip? What do they do exactly? I havnt been to too many weddings on LI and havn't noticed a matrie D at the ones I went to.

Yes, very touchy subject.

My RH told me that the 18% gratuity paid for the staff but not maitre d'. We tipped him on the day of. We did not tip for the staff. I don't see why I would tip if I alredy tipped when I paid the RH

Maitre d' pretty much assisted me on my wedding day. From beginning to end. He made sure everything when smoothly. He was my point of contact on the day of. Almost like a day of coordinator in my case.

I know that Bridgeview charges you $2 a person for the maitre' d in your contract, and you can give more at the end if they deserve it. I'm not too sure how much to tip a DJ though. Maybe 10% of your package??

Re: tipping/gratuity

This is what I posted right before the wedding - I just edited to what I actually did...

I will tip the maitre d' - $500 - or about $3.50 per person. Yup $500

I will tip the bridal attendant $50 - actually added $50 to this tip.

I will tip the videographer $50 - he owns the company but I want to give a little extra. I tipped my videographer $75 as I had a worker not the owner and I tipped $50 to the secondary.

I have two photographers - one will be with us for 10 hours - he will get $100 - the other will be with us for 5 hours, owns the company, so I will tip $50.

I will tip the flower delivery $25 - I am being charged a small delivery charge so I am not going crazy here.

I am probably going to tip the DOC $50 - just to give a little extra.

I will be tipping hair & makeup girls around 20% - came to about $100 each

I will tip the DJ $75 -he also owns the company. I ended up tipping him $175 in total - added $100 at the end of the night b/c he did such a terrific job.

I have a 3 piece jazz bad playing for our ceremony (30 minutes) and 5 piece jazz band for CH (one hour) $100 in total.

We will also be tipping the head bartender - (we tipped about $100) assuming he will share, the valet ($50), and the bathroom attendant ($25)- but just token tips. I am not tipping every waiter/waitress - I have to assume the 20% gratuity is covering something.

Not sure about the minister - we paid his church directly so I think we should tip him something - but probably between $25 - $50. Tipped $25

And I think that is it - PHEW
