Last year on the radio, 'they' said to pretend there is an egg on your brake pedal. Don't slam on them just ease onto them. And leave plenty of following distance

go slower than usual and dont stay to close to the car in front of you if they stop short you will hit them and/or skid into them and possibly another car

I don't have any good tips. Just wanted to tell everyone to be very careful out there and take it very slow!

Re: Tips for Driving in the snow?
if you skid on ice, do NOT slam on the brakes.. which would be your natural instinct!

If you have a light car, put sand bags or other heavy objects in your trunk. Stops your back end from sliding out.

Keeping your gas tank full also adds nice weight to the rear.

Be careful I just got home from dropping my FH off at work. He cant drive his car in this weather. I did 20 mph on the seaford Oyster Bay 135. some things I noticed. Dont speed go slow take ure time. Leave lots of room. Dont ride peoples Trunks. If you drive an SUV u do have the advantage... BUT there also other people who dont drive SUV's like my self. Don't cut us off...

Re: Tips for Driving in the snow?
another important thing is not to drive TOO slow - it's hard to get traction sometimes (especially uphill) and if you're going too slowly , the person behind you might have trouble and slide back.... i think the most important thing is to BE AWARE...not only of your car - but of those cars around you! be careful everyone!!

Re: Tips for Driving in the snow?
If you drive an automatic remember you can change gears. Driving in either first or second gear(depending on your speed) rather than drive, will help you keep the car going slow. It causes your engine to rev less and therefore your speed stays down. To everyone driving be very very careful.

Actually SUV's being heavier aren't all that safer.. once they start a spin its harder for them to get out of it without large movements.
It's like a aircraft carrier trying to turn around verses a sail boat.
OH I got one for you Four Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive does NOT mean you can drive on ice. unfortunately those functions only work if you have traction. If all four tires are sliding along it will do no good.
My advice, Drive slower than normal, but not too slow (as others say.. traction is necessary), keep a lot of space.
Make delibrate (sp) turns, nice and slow but constant, like you first learned. Be prepared for the spin even if it doesnt happen.
If possible, avoid a lot of stop and go, it's when you spin.
Larger through ways are usually more travel worn and may be easier to navigate, but be careful for recent flurries.. Just because it looks dry doesn't mean it is.
BLACK ICE (need I say more?) Keep both hands on the wheel (i am guilty of driving one handed normally)
Keep calm. For once, this is the time Road Rage REALLY isn't worth it. Keep your mind on your driving on the obstacles around you (including other cars) but do NOT get flustered by the other drivers, it only distracts you and may cause you to be careless.
Radio (leave it alone)
Call ahead, let me people know when you're leaving your route, just in case (and if you're that worried)
No brakes (if possible)
(These are the same for any severe winter weather)
Good Luck (or don't drive at all, which I usually prefer)

drive very fast and take lots of chances..
On a more serious note, my dad always told me if you fishtail take your foot off the gas and try to turn the wheel into the the way that you are swirving to..
Everyone drive safe out there..Try to stay home with FH/DH and enjoy eachother on this snowy Friday night.
