If you're looking at a home that has central ac make sure it is not hooked up to the same system as your heating system. About 20 years ago this was a very popular thing to do and a lot of homes have it.
Here's the problem...if one goes the other goes and it is VERY expensive to fix. One of my friends just lost her ac and it's hooked up to her heating system so she has to get it fixed otherwise she wont have heat in the winter. It's going to cost her $5,000-10,000 to fix. If they weren't connected it would only cost about $2,500.
Just keep that in the back of your mind when you're looking.

What does your friend have to replace? Do mean sharing duct work?

I don't know exactly what she has to replace. I believe it's the whole system.

Re: Tips for homebuyers and homeowners
My heat and central a/c are shared and when we bought the place it wasn't working properly. The owner had to replace the whole unit and it only cost $1700. I wonder what is wrong with her system that it is going to cost her that much!?!?
