Tips for keeping your Christmas tree alive?

Anyone have a great tip for increasing the longevity of your Christmas tree? I hate it when they dry out so quickly. Thanks!

I saw on tv this morning, to cut an inch off of the bottom of the tree, and to put in a stand that holds 2 gallons of water, and keep watering it. He also showed there is some preservative, but they never mentioned the name, that you can add to the water.

How to Fireproof a Christmas Tree

This basically keeps it alive and fresh better than just regular tap water, but I've been told if you just make sure there's alot of water in it twice a day you should be OK.

My apartment is very dry so I am using the solution in that link.

Be careful with the sugar. Once my college roommate and I put in too much sugar and the tree rotted. I'm not kidding - all of a sudden there was this bad smell in the room and we realized it was the tree - we had to throw it out and we only had it a week. I'm pretty sure we gave it too much sugar because it wasn't dried out yet. Usually the places sell some kind of preservative you can put in to keep it fresh.
