tips for photographers

Does anyone know if you tip a photographer?? I read somewhere that you're not supposed to tip anyone who has their own business. Thoughts??

I have heard the same thing... but if they bring an assistant with them then that person gets tipped.

Re: tips for photographers

as someone who has worked as a photo assistant for the last 8 years, i can tell you right now!
if your photographer is the owner, then you don't have to.
if your photographer works for the studio but is not an owner, its a very kind gesture, even if its only 20 bucks.
if they have an assistant, you absolutely should tip them, again, even if its only 20 bucks, it does show appreciation.
they don't make much, the get stepped on, crawl on floors, work magic with your dress for pictures, make sure your makeup is perfect for pictures and if they're good, they were there before the photographer to start setting up.
the photo assistant is the most under-appreciated and sh*t-on person all day and everyone always forgets about them! hahaha

no you do tip the photographer. you also tip the assistant. standard is about $100 for the photographer and $50 for each assistant

If the photographer owns his own business and is the person shootng your wedding, then you do not have to tip him/her. If they work for a company where there are many photographers, then yes you should tip them something because chances are they are not seeing nearly all that money you are paying.

awww you poor thing! after reading this, we're def gonna take care of the assistant! I used to bridal attend so I understand about fixing the dress and crawling on floors lol, but not nearly as much as you!! I'm sure you've made a lot of brides extremely happy, and feel rewarded!

Re: tips for photographers

just a thought but...

most of your vendors you don't see after the wedding (flowers, DJ, etc).

You have to work with photographer and video afterwards. (whether they own the company or not

Just on that principle alone, I would tip them well. I want them to take good care of me lol

talking to omni pop, they said u dont have to tip the band, but if u want to it is nice. but if u think about it if u have a band and tip them 100$ for an 8 person band thats like $10 a person....almost not even worth tipping.

I know my photographer is the owner bc we requested him, he gets most if not all the money anyway.

Re: tips for photographers

I think you should tip both. I am inclined to tip our Photog a nice amount considering the pics are the one of the most important products of the Big Day. For our ePic session, I tipped the Photog $75 and his Assit $30. Wedding will be much more since I am spending more time and it is more important to us.
