Tips on DIY monogram cake topper?

Does any one have tips on how to make it look Beautiful and NOT like a 3rd grade art project??

i tend to be sorta crafty but then theres some things i do that i look at and giggle that it looks like a 3rd grader did it!

Also What size letter do you get if you just do the last initial?

and what size would you get if you did a full monogram?

I dont know how to make, I bought mine from ebay. The sizes I have are 2.75' for the small and 4.5' for the large.

I know there was someone here that made hers and it came out beautiful but I dont remember who.
