do you just put the cash in the envelope with the vendor's name on it, or do you also write a note or something inside to thank them?
also, when exactly does the best man give out the checks? is it at the very end of the reception, when the guests have left already?

I'm not going to write a note. How will I know what to say? What if they ******?
I'm not putting the best man in charge of this because he's a moron and will forget and then keep the money... I think I'm going to ask my DOC to do it.
I think it should be done towards the end of the night (like within the last 30 minutes) and just remember any vendors who may be leaving after the ceremony or cocktail hour.

For my DJ I might include a little note in with the tip for each person but not for anyone else.
Typically tips go out at the end of the event. All the vendors should come up to you to say goodbye. I'd have best man around so he can give it to them then.

I didn't write any notes. I just had the cash in an envelope. I had my dad hand them out at the very end of the night - we only had 4 vendors to give tips to at that point (dj, mc, photographer & his assistant) so we gave the dj and the mc the tips when they were packing everything up and we gave the photographer and his assistant their tips when they were letting us know that they were leaving, which was when we were saying goodbye to guests.

We just put them in an envelope with the vendor's name on it. I didn't trust BIL with it (he gets WAY too drunk). My dad and I handed out all the tips.
