To get my FH to save money

My FH has a terrible problem he does not know or it seams want to save money. I try to get him to save but it is like fighting a brick wall. Any ideas would be great because now that the date is set I need to start saving money.

One of the best ways to get anyone to save is to take the thinking/work out of it.

Not sure if you can get him to do this but you could try - have him set up a money market account and then set up an automatic transfer on line. If he already has direct deposit, this will work well.

Money goes from work to bank, from bank to money market and starts working for him! Start out small - $50 a month and when he sees it doesn't 'hurt' bump it up to $75 or $100.

Another one some people do well with is the 'save on a bad habit' one. This one is based on giving up something that is bad for you (smoking, beer, candy - whatever as long as it costs $$$) and whenever you get the urge to do that bad thing, you put the $ you would have spent in a jar. You think this wouldn't add up but with the price of cigs these days, you can bank some dollars. Of course the side benefit is that you can get rid of a bad habit...

I feel your pain. I have auto transfer set up for myself. For FH, every payday he writes me a check that I put in the wedding account. No, ifs, ands or buts. I forced him into this b/c I had $3000 banked for the wedding and he had nothing. (this was months ago).

I feel the same way.. I am trying to save money and he is, but somehow he seems to manage to buy something new... He has to understand that we only have 6 more months to go

I had my FI set up an ING savings account and he automatically transfers $$$ on the first of each month. I also tell him periodically how much I have saved to make him feel bad Nothing like appealing to the male ego!

Thank you all very much! I feel better now that I know other people are going through What I am going through.

All of your advice was great and I will use lots of it.

Set up an XL spread sheet - of how much you need for the wedding, house and honeymoon -
figure in your reg. bills and how much each of you make -

then show him that if you need to come with with lets just say 30,000.00 how much you each need to combine -

open a join savings account and each time you pay off something or make a deposit highlight in blue him pink you and just track it -

there are things that your each going to want - he isnt going to want to live with his mother - and you wont feel comfortable doing anything untill you know that you can make a morage or rent payment - so if you have to spend 1500 to keep a roof over you head you have to know that you can at least save that now or you have no business living together -

Good luck -

We did something just like this and it worked perfectly for us. We have a joint account that all the bills come from and personal accounts for spending money. We set up a budget and every paycheck a certain amount gets transfered to our personal accounts for spending money and the rest to savings or to pay bills. Never realized how much money we wasted..

Set up a seperate bank account and have an automatic draft come out of his chekcing when he gets paid, so he wont even miss it

Take his paychecks minus some spending money and take control of the finances. We started this (from LIW advice ) and things are running much smoother. We are really getting on track with his credit and our savings.

Re: To get my FH to save money

FH would definitely not go for me taking his paycheck. I have honestly given up on trying to 'make' him save money. I just don't pay for anything when we go out or when we do any shopping. I ask him for cash to pay with. I figure that if he is paying cash for all of these things and I am not putting any of 'my' money towards them, they money that I am saving is half his money too.

Re: To get my FH to save money

We set-up a joint savings account and decided how much would come out of our paychecks and that would be deposited. I check on it to make sure that we are both doing it and I love seeing our money grow together!

Good luck!
