Not.
I've read that some places pass them thru the machine even after you hand cancel them.

Agreed. We didn't hand cancel and they all came out perfectly fine. We had no raised embellishments on them though- no ribbons or rhinestones or anything.

It's when you or the post office takes the stamp to void the stamp. It's not supposed to go through the machine but some PO's still put it through anyway

I didn't hand cancel. The post office I went to (Queens) said that if the envelopes aren't too thick, they shouldn't be hand cancelled, but if they are thick, they should be. HTH

Mine were hand cancelled because they were not the 'normal' size.

FMIL hand cancelled them out in NJ. Most of the invites were fine, but a few delivered to Manhattan were double cancelled.
I just wouldn't try to do it in Manhattan. I got turned away by 3 post offices, saying they don't do that.

My PO Box is at Sound Beach but I happened to be by the MP PO and went there first and they did a GREAT job...
I hate all the women at the Sound Beach PO except for the short blonde mullet lady, and I like the big dude
