To hyphenate or not?

To hyphenate or not?

What did/ are you girls doing? I think my name sounds silly hyphenated, but I kinda don't want to lose the Ramos in me! Also, my Dad thinks it will be much easier for work if I hyphenate.

I'm not hyphenating but if it was for work and it would be easier I probably would. I definitely want to take his name because it's much easier to say/spell than mine but it's different for everyone.

His last name is DePaola and mine is Ramos. My first name is Jessamyn, which EVERYONE gets wrong. My name all together sounds like a mess!

Re: To hyphenate or not?

for now, i'm keeping my name indefinitely. what did you put on the marriage license? on that, i put his name but only after i read that you can't change it on the ML after the fact (without going to court) and that just b/c i put his name didn't mean i HAD to change it legally and everywhere else.

if your name sounds good hyphenated, then go for it. i'm not a big fan of how mine sounds so i'm just keeping mine

I'm legally changing it but using the hyphenated version for work.

I wanted to, but FH didnt like the idea... So since I dont have a middle name, I am making my maiden name my middle name and taking FH's name as my last....this way I can still use my maiden name professionally.

I personally hate my current last name, so I can't wait to get rid of it! Booth is muchhhhh easier and nicer.

I'm also going to keep my last name as a middle name (I don't have a middle name so this works well). But I've been working for about 2 years now and I want people to be able recognize who I am. I figured for a while I will have my signature at the bottom of emails have my first, middle and new last name so people get it. Then probably just drop the full middle and use an initial.

FH said do whatever makes me happy - even if that means keeping my name. However when his brother was married and his SIL had not yet changed her name he was annoyed. I will miss my name it is a huge part of my identity - I am changing my name.

just an idea for some of you - FSIL (FBIL wife) replaced her middle name with her maiden name - it was too long to hyphenate.

i wanted to hyphenate because I wanted to be mean... if i did it would be 16 letters without the hyphen.

THis KILLED me....I love my name, but if I hyphenated it just would have been way too long (19) letters! That's almost a whole alphabet in and of itself.

I am hyphenating at work but on the license I just took FH's name. to make it easier.

Re: To hyphenate or not?

I already put in the request to change my name at work!!! I love my current last name but I can't wait to take FH's. It's so simple and easy!!!!!!!! He was sure I'd hyphenate or just keep my last name. At the marriage license office when they asked me if I was taking his name and I said 'Of course!' He was soo happy!!!!

Re: To hyphenate or not?

for me hypenating would make my name TOO long. My new last name is going to be 13 letters in itself! I do love my last name though. So i'm thinking of just adding my married name to the end of mine, that way i'm pretty sure i can use either. someone earlier wrote that even though you change it on the marriage license, it doesn't mean you have to change it legally. so that made me feel better too!

plus i just realized i just bought a brand new box of checks with my current address and maiden name. i don't want to have to waste them just yet with a new account and name! LOL...bad excuse i know. i better start writing more checks instead of paying online!

Re: To hyphenate or not?

I know how you feel about everyone spelling your name wrong! My is ALYson and no one can ever figure out one L and one Y. My current last name is only 4 letters long and I'm going to Rutigliano (another name no one can spell - or pronounce unless they are italian).

I'm going to make my middle name my maiden name and take his last name. I just love the tradition of it, and although I'll be sad to lose mine I'm acutally really excited to take his.

exactly what I am doing! I called SS office already to see if there would be a problem to do that. SO I just got to get around to doing the paperwork.
