FH is deciding whether or not to invite his boss's boss. He's inviting his boss and his previous boss. His boss's boss is someone he only talks to every couple of weeks, but he's also someone who wrote his recommendations to grad school and has given him lots of advice on grad school...and he was behind FH's recent promotion.
He doesn't want to seem like he's digging for a gift, and he doesn't want to leave him feeling slighted (he's inviting about 10 people from work). What do you think? We need to send out invites tomorrow!

I would probably invite him since you are inviting others from his job too. When they all talk about your wedding at the office you don't want the big boss to feel left out. He may be insulted and not get the next promotion. JMO!!!

If he helped him out with grad school, it sounds like he is a fairly significant work contact. I would definately invite him

Invite him. After the invitations went out I talked to each person that I invited and explained to them that I just wanted to share my special day with them because they were my friends or played a big part in my life or whatnot. I felt that was a good way to let them know they were not getting invited purely for gifts.

invite him, maybe your FI should tell him that he sent an invitation, because of all the nice things he's done for him, but that he is not obligated.

Invite him. I invited my boss thinking there was no way he would come and I was concerned that he would think I was just asking for a gift. Well, my boss surprised me. He's coming!
