to Jewish brides - I have some questions

to Jewish brides - I have some questions

Hi girls,

SO I know Jewish couples are supposed to exchange plain gold bands. But I really want a band with diamonds.

Same goes for a strapless dress. I want one, but know my shoulders are supposed to be covered...

Anyone run into any trouble with this? What've your solutions been? (We're probably going to be married by a Reform rabbi, if that helps).

Thanks!

Yes jewish couples are supposed to exchange gold bands on their index fingers however this is only done under the chuppa. My wedding band is an eternal diamond band and then im slipping it on after the ceremony and taking off the the simple gold band.

im wearing a strapless dress b/c im not that religous usually only the mothers bride cover their shoulders and its not a problem at all esp. if youre going to have a reform rabbi.

So, the reason for the gold band is this: the rabbis wanted to make sure there were no fake stones in the ring, and so a plain ring was easier to prove its worth. You can switch if you want after the ceremony. My FW and I have major ethical issues with diamonds, so we're just doing plain bands.

Your shoulders only really need to be covered if your getting married by an orthodox rabbi- i feel most other people are okay with strapless. Again, I'd check with your rabbi to make sure it's cool with her/him, but I can't see why it would be an issue.

I borrowed my MIL's ring for the ceremony and then after put on my diamond wedding band. I got married by a conservative rabbi and this was fine with him.

I am using a band my mother used to get married in and then putting my band on. Also, you don't have to wear strapless - its a matter of preference by you and the rabbi; although, in my family I have no choice b/c my mother would kill me if I wore strapless during the ceremony!

We had a true orthodox ceremony (married by a lubavitch rabbi) The reason for the plain gold band is that it's supposed to have no interruptions, a never ending circle. Many girls have a plain gold band for the ceremony but have a diamond band for after. I wanted a diamond band, but then decided that it was more important to me to wear the ring I was married in.

As for the strapless thing... I wore a halter top dress which came with a shawl which I used during the ceremony only to keep my shoulders covered. My bridesmaids wore strapless dresses and did the same.

i am not jewish, but my friend was married by a rabbi february 06.

this is what she did, i thought it was interesting.
she got a plain band, very thin, which was used during the ceremony. this band she has kept on her finger. she then put her e-ring and a diamond wedding band over that. so, she wears three rings. the one from the ceremony is hardly seen by the other rings.

i hope i explained that well.

and she wore a strapless dress. i don't know what kind of rabbi married her, but it didn't seem to be a problem.

Re: to Jewish brides - I have some questions

traditionally, Jewish brides are supposed to have a plain band, but i know plenty of Jewish brides who have had a band with diamonds for their ceremonies and also brides who have 2 rings- a plain one for the ceremony and a diamond one they put on after.

as for a strapless dress, i got married in a reform temple and i had a strapless dress. as long as your shoulders are covered by your veil or shawl it should be ok. but check with your rabbi or cantor as to what his/her requirements are.
